How do you know how to decide if a player should be a Deep-Lying or Advanced Midfielder?

The ones with the better defensive skills are usually best suited for the deep-lying playmaker role and vice versa with advanced playmaker.

In this pic (Andy Carroll) i have him as a Target Man.. Look at how his stats are highlighted. If the Highlighted stats look good, then he's gonna play good at that position. At least that's how i figured it out

I wouldn't really base it on that unless the midfield doesn't have anybody that is decent at defending. Otherwise you want your deep-lying playmaker to sit back, but not have to worry about defensive duties. At deep-lying you want them to have great passing and composure especially IMO. If you want somebody to dictate your play and be always ready for a pass then play them deep-lying. if you want them getting involved in the box and scoring goals, getting loads of assists etc. then play him advanced.

As mentioned already it's also to do with attributes so have a look at which ones are highlighted - take note that not all of them are that important E.G. at deep-lying playmaker it highlights some defensive attributes, they aren't that important if you have a good defence and have somebody who is good at defending alongside the player.

Defensive attributes are much more important for ball winning midfielders (tackling, covering, heading). Deep lying playmakers and advanced playmakers both need flair, creativity, passing and technique attributes. If your player has these attributes, consider him for a playmaker position. Then, if he also has good tackling / covering / heading he could be played deep lying, if he has got finishing or distance shooting abilities he could be an advanced playmaker.

Personally, I rather decide based on the special moves they have. Like if someone has powerful / targetted shots, deadly passes, or running into open areas they will play in advanced position while someone who is looking for challenges or has close covering they will play deep lying position.

Depends on your style of play. I play a 4-2-3-1 with Arsenal and stick Fabregas as a deep-lying playmaker as I have Pastore in front to do the dribbling. Even though I have Song to be the ball winnning CM I want Fabregas to sit back and pass the ball around to keep the game at his tempo. I know I'm wasting his talent by oh well.
