defensive performances

I can't seem to make my more defensive-dutied players get consistently decent ratings.

I'm not looking for virtuoso performances from my holding midfielders or centre backs, but it really reflects badly on them when their average rating is between 6.6 and 6.8 most of the time. (Goalkeeper included)

Is this normal? Does the game only boost their ratings if they score a goal? Do I need to successfully nullify a stronger team for it to happen?

I do leak goals, but there doesnt seem to be much I can do to improve my defence.

I have seen players (even defenders) get ratings of around 8 or 9 without scoring, so yes it's possible to increase ratings without the player scoring.

As for a defensive strategy i can't suggest much but there are tactics available here that can make your defenders do well.

All i tend to do is play my defensive line very deep, but that suits the tactic I'm using.

I find the average for my defenders is usually around 6.8. Any lower than 6.7 and I reckon they've had a bad game. In the 7s they've generally had a good one. Any higher than 7 and they've almost certainly scored a goal.

I suppose theoretically, if a defender is good enough, then he'll play well as the last line of defence...

I guess he'll need decent support from his def mids, though...so I'll check that!

Mine usually average 7.0-7.2. Not sure why as they dont have any special instructions, but they are quality players.

I have seen 8.0+ from Cbs who haven't scored or assisted. Usually they make a dozen tackles, tons of interceptions, and no missed headers plus high passing %

man and tight. Probably helps that I have a defensive minded MC who drops into a DMC position. Probably forces opposition into more mistakes for my Cbs to capitalize on.
