Does 'competition for places' exist in FM?

There's a lot of talk about this in real football. If Marcelo at Real Madrid has another top class left back in Coentrao competing for his place it should motivate him to play better. Without Coentrao it could make Marcelo lose some motivation or become lazy resulting in poor performances. Does that exist in FM?

It doesnt exist with existing squad players but if your declare interest in an other teams player then sometimes the player who currently is 1st choice in your team for that position will gain morale and say he is looking forward to the challenge is said player joins the club. Although it will have a negative effect if a current player feels you have signed too many players in his position and there is too much competition.

This is an area I would love to see significant improvement.

Currently, one player is happy when he plays and the other is unhappy when he doesnt. It is much more nuanced than that, and the game doesnt do a good job of providing that complexity.

To answer your question, no, the game doesnt work that way, except in the rare and limited circumstances that RickyHyde described.
