I was lying in my bed on a cool Sunday morning, watching Sky Sports News, when the news broke that Alan Pardew had resigned from his position as Southamton manager, following a dispute with right-back Dan Harding. I thought to myself, is this MY chance to get into management? Is it?
I immediatley got onto my phone and got in contact with there chairman Markus Liebherr (RIP), he seemed a friendly bloke and he asked me to get down to the St Marys Stadium within the next half-an-hour.
Once I arrived I saw 5 well-known managers, Alan Curbishley, Greg Abbott, John Barnes, Russell Slade and Joe Jordan. I got into a conversation with Alan Curbishley regarding the current state of football, until Mr. Liebherr invited my into his office. I was a nervous wreck.
When I got out of the office, I felt relieved, and I felt fairly optimistic, I got into my car, and drove home. I made myself some lunch and tuned into Sky Sports News to wait for an announcement. 10 minutes later, I collapsed with shock. Scrolled across the bottom in a yellow back was 'Southampton appoint unknown manager Tony Procter as manager'. I blinked three times, but nothing changed, it was true!
'Ring, Ring'
'Hello', I answered.
'Hello, it's Mr. Liebherr, congratulations, see you tomorrow'
He hung up.
I couldn't believe it. I had texts on congratulations flying in at my. I was manager of Southampton!
