Intro:
There are a lot of England tactics flying around at the moment, but none from what i see that are trying to emulate the sort of tactics Fabio Capello is and/or has been using throughout the last year or two he has been in charge. An example of game where Capello has subverted his otherwise traditionally Italian tactics is the USA game, in which he switched Gerrard from the left into the centre to play off Rooney and Heskey more and almost alongside Frank Lampard.

TACTICS:

The basic formation is a traditional 4-4-2, but often switches to a less conservative 4-2-3-1, With Heskey (as this is Capello's preferred choice as target man) often dropping deep to win flick-on headers or turn it around the corner for Rooney, or as he did against the USA, take it on his chest and turn, looking often for Lennon, or Rooney, or even Gerrard making runs inside and into the box. Heskey's strength often means he is perhaps better at this than Peter Crouch, who although 6' 7" still prefers the ball into feet as he runs into the box, and also for this reason, Rooney seems to prefer playing with Heskey, who is a little less selfish, and stronger than Crouch is. Therefore it seems clear that a Target Man - support duty for Heskey/Crouch is correct, while Rooney is a deep lying forward, attack as he is also keen to help out Heskey (I'm also looking at a complete forward role)

The backline is fairly simplistic, with Gerrard moving inside from the left, giving space for Cole to move forward, hugging the touchline, meaning we give him a wingback, automatic role, as he seems clever/experienced enough to fulfill this. On the other side, Lennon plays wider than Gerrard on the left and sticks to the touchline, looking to get onto through balls, often from Glen Johnson. Talking of which, Johnson's runs forward are limited meaning we give him a support role, in either FB or WB, depending on who is playing and the player's natural tendencies to get forward or stay back and help out.

The final players, including the back 3 aren't difficult to explain. Barry has the simplest of instructions, while having a difficult and extremely important role to play: Capello looks to Barry to provide cover for players such as Cole and Gerrard, bombing forward on the left and often leaving gaps, Barry helps out Lampard to, allowing him a little more freedom to move forward as he wins the ball back in midfield, and stops opposing runs from deep. (Ball Winning Midfielder - DEFEND). Lampard however is given the same role as he is at Chelsea, with forward runs limited and not a lot of space for him, with Heskey/ Rooney/ Gerrard occupying that space a lot. (Therefore Deep-Lying Playmaker support). Lennon is an out and out winger on the right. Terry and Ferdinand push up and try and play players offside, often to England's demise, as they are turned too easily, especially in the absence of Ferdinand, as King is way too slow, as is Carragher, despite their experience. So they're both CBs with Defend duty. Green is simply GK- Defend, and bear in mind that when choosing whether to close down opposition midfield players, put as never, with Green set to "slip". Traditionally, all, or at least the majority of England's goalkeepers make a horrible mistake, Seaman vs Brazil, Robinson, Carson, Green, but this is difficult to emulate in FM!

Work in Progress:
This tactic is more or less plug & play with slight adjustments to be made depending on substitutions and preferences. I have not completed this tactic as yet, despite finishing the World Cup and making slow, but steady progress in European Qualification for 2012.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT(S): "Touchline Shouts"
- Retain posession
- Exploit the flanks

(you could also use hassle opponents if you feel the opposition are dominating too much as you can always see Capello encouraging his team to press and win the ball back)

Opposition Instructions:
- Personally, i prefer not to use them at all, but it's entirely up to you! Whatever you guys think best

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am more than welcome to criticism and/or suggestions so fire away if needs be, this is very much a "WORK IN PROGRESS" and i just thought i would:
a) Give a heads up
b) Let some of you test my tactic.

SCREENSHOTS

I even managed to beat Portugal!

AND... win a penalty shootout. 8-|

AND lose one :'(
.

EDIT: I forgot to give my main sources for the tactic, here they are:
Zonal Marking
and, to a lesser extent:
FM-Britain

If possible mate - I just think that the best example of it is England, but thanks for the comment! One thing i've already noticed is that the defensive line should be just on push up, not too high, and also that crosses should be drilled, not floated.

BACK TO SCHOOL TOMORROW SO I'M OFF TO SLEEP BUT I WILL PROBABLY PLAY AGAIN TOMORROW AND UPDATE TACTIC IF AND WHEN I CAN

Hey mate, I'm trying out your tactic in a new save with England, just noticed the squad have realistic numbers, like the centre backs have 5 and 6 and the left back has 3 etc, it this something to do with the tactic?

Uh, i'm not sure - it could be - having played the world cup i was keen (for no real reason other than personal preference) to have real squad numbers - alternatively it could just be the order in which you pick the team: For example - JT is number 6, Rio is 5, because Gerrard is always number 4, and Lampard is number 8, while the two strikers are usually (for England at least) 10 and 9, with Crouch this year being given the number 9.
Hope that wasn't too muddled and confusing!

I will give em a go seeing as I'm in a England save atm
But can i just ask where did you get thoes logo's from?

Just tried this tactic in a friendly against Mexico and won 3-0 :P Nice one

glad to hear some good results coming your way, i can't deal with Switzerland for some reason, King has been absolutely awful, that's the only thing about FM 10, a lot of underrated players like Michael Dawson and Ledley King

OP edited if anyone wants to have a look. I'm about to try a couple of things out in a friendly against the USA. I'm pushing Steven Gerrard forward and making him more central, however i'm keeping my "big man" Peter Crouch up front, with Wayne Rooney on the left, and the others kept the same. I'll let you know how it looks!

Working wonders so far mate!

Netherlands 1-2 England
Lennon and Rooney scored.

England 3-0 Slovenia
King, Lennon and Crouch scored.

England 5-1 Croatia
Heskey hatrick! Crouch and Barry also scored.

I'm sorry - i don't have glasses, Heskey did what now? lol, update to tactic coming tomorrow i think!

EDIT: Are you using the touchline instructions, the "exploit the flanks" is especially important for England i think, considering how much they use the pace of Lennon/Walcott

fair play to making a good tactic but face it england are **** all they do is boot the ball up the pitch and hope for the best (play and rush)

joss, the tactic looks good i use similar roles for my united side, though vastly different team instructions. one thing though. rooney tends to play off heskey, rather than alongside him, its what made him so hard to pick up in qualifying, whereas against the usa he played ahead of heskey and got marked out the game. try a complete forward support/targetman attack combination

Thanks for the help man, i'll bear that in mind in my next friendly, I'm about to play the Euro's after one more friendly so i'll post screenshots and probably update the tactic. I was actually just about to mention what Franz Beckenbauer said and that in response i was making the passing more direct to see if that would make the tactic more realistic and similar to how they really play under Capello, so it turns out that the "off topic" post, although seemingly a little irrelevant and untrue may actually be entirely valid.

Thanks to all those who have downloaded and tested this tactic, I will update soon!

Thursday 17th June
I have made some adjustments tonight, but still don't feel fully confident of it's realism, I reckon i'll have a "Fabio Capello Emulation Tactic v 1.2" tomorrow, after England take on Algeria in Cape Town at 7.30 pm. I hope to analyse their formation and tactic, and make adjustments to the tactic on FM according to, for example, if England "kick and rush" or if Gerrard plays in his preferred, more advanced role. Look forward to releasing the "BETA" once the tactic nears completion and hopefully perfection ;).

Keep commenting with your success and suggestions, criticism is welcome so long as it is constructive, like madsheep's was!

Bentley

England 3-1 Slovenia

Discrace by England tonight, hey joss, could you try and start working on a 4-5-1 tactic for England, Gerrard behind Rooney type tactic, loving the 4-4-2 one so far :)

Yup, i watched the game at a mates house and perhaps my tactical insight was slightly hindered among the beer and barbecue as well as the moaning and groaning about the game. England simply didn't turn up today - they looked tired and complacent from start to finish and Capello was too stubborn, as Alan Shearer and co. said to change his 4-4-2 formation. For me in particular, Rooney was dropping far too deep and i think they were a little surprised that Algeria didn't go for it, considering they needed a win to realistically stay in the competition. Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney were poor too. I thought the Defoe substitution was the right one to make, Heskey playing poorly, and it would mean that Rooney could drop deeper and play off a quick Defoe, but bring on SWP was a mistake, as well as Crouchy who should've started against a tall, but not particularly strong Algeria side.

In response to the actual question(s)/request(s) yes i will be doing a 4-2-3-1/4-5-1 tactic for England, with Gerrard playing off Rooney, though i don't know much about this formation in FM, Advanced Play maker?/Attacking Midfield?
