It has been confirmed that Fabio Alexandre has been appointed as Sporting Clube de Portugal’s new manager, as he has been reported to sign a one-year deal with Sporting.
Alexandre has replaced the previous Sporting CP manager Carlos Carvalhal, who's six month reign wasnt enough to earn him a new contract.
Alexandre in a recent interview told that “I am joining on the back of a negative season for Sporting, as they were not able to challenge for any trophy and finished 4th, which I believe is below the club's expectations,” he told the Sporting CP website.
“I am confident that with some additions to the squad, hard work and commitment, we can move this club forward in the right direction.”
“I have discussed my aspirations with the chairman [José Eduardo Bettencourt] and believe that we are aligned in our aims for what can realistically be achieved here,” said Alexandre.
“I hope the Sporting fans will enjoy some special times during this season’s campaign and we will work hard to achieve that.”
He added: “I’m looking forward to working with the squad as soon as possible, and in making sure the on-pitch preparations are complete before the first competitive ball is kicked in August.”

Sporting CP boss Fabio Alexandre has been given the green light to bring in at least two big-hitters this summer - but also agrees that after last season's failure, that a radical change is needed at Jose Alvalade.
Sporting CP chairman J.E.Bettencourt last night revealed the outline of Sporting's summer transfer plans had been agreed at a board meeting attended by Alexandre earlier in the week.
And while it seems likely that the likes of Helder Postiga, Abel and Tonel will go, J.E.B has promised that their will be players being brought in their places.
J.E.B said: "I have said that in every year there is some refreshing of the squad and maybe we can expect three or four in and three or four out.
"But this year Alexandre has said that a change is needed and some players do not have the quality they used to have. He has however said that the players will have their chance to prove themselves to him.
"We can expect a couple of changes but that is just the nature of football, you can't have the jigsaw puzzle together and that is it forever.
"Let's see how the summer pans out. Once we are really clear on the kind of vacancies we may have and what we want to fill, we will decide what kind of player we want."
Sporting CP have been linked with Evaldo and Mateus from Braga and also Marco Torsiglieri but both J.E.B and Alexandre have hinted at more new faces

Fabio Alexandre said there would be a radical change and he was right.. In the space of a month from late June to the end of July, there has been alot of transfer activity happening down at Estadio de Jose Alvalade. 6 new signings have arrived while 6 have left to play their football at a different destination.
Among the signings, Alberto Zapater was the most expensive costing £2million to bring him from Stadio Luigi Ferraris to Lisbon. At his press conference, sitting next to his new manager, he said, "I was happy in Italy, but when a man like the one that is sitting on my left calls me five days in a row to tell me that I would be really important for the team, the decision was made a lot easier. It is true that the Italian Championship has a bigger following, but that doesn’t really matter. I have come to a team that wants to win, win, win, and that is what is more important."
Following Zapater to Alvalade are :
- Vincenzo Camilleri, a centre back costing £1.1million from Reggina
- Marco Torsiglieri (pic below), also a centre back and also costing £1.1million from Velez
- Evaldo (pic below), 27 year old left back from Braga, costing £500K
- Matheus, 26 year old attacking midfielder, who arrives also from Braga costing 450K
and also,
- Jaime Valdes (pic below), 28 year old midfielder, from Atalanta for 750K.
Fabio Alexandre also has wished all the best to the following 7 players who have left for new adventures: Tonel (£3.5million move to Marseille), Tiago (£1.2million to Real Madrid), youngsters Rui Fonte (£1.7million to Chelsea), William Owusu (£1million to Juventus) and Renato Neto (£1.5million move to Inter), and finally Helder Postiga who finalised a £5.25million move to Getafe on the last day of July.
