In a rather surprising turn of events, ex-Sporting player Fabio Alexandre has been appointed as the new manager of the Lions. Alexandre succeeds Paulo Bento and will have the tough task of leading Sporting to the Portuguese title, something that hasnt been achieved since 2002.
Everything seemed to hint that Paulo Sergio would be at the helm of the club, but Sporting were unable to reach an agreement with Vit.Guimaraes and ultimately had to look elsewhere.
President Eduardo Bettencourt had suggested his preference was a young, Portuguese manager, and in the 31-year-old he has found just that.

Following this announcement, Fabio Alexandre gave his first press conference and set his target for the new season by saying ' I will look to bring in the best players available to the club' and also that the main objective for the season will be to become Champions!!

Bright Start To The Season...

So far Fabio Alexandre's reign at the command of Sporting CP has started in the best way possible with 8 pre-season games being played with 7 wins, a draw and a friendly cup win at Reading being accomplished, and also managed to guarantee a place in the Champions League Play-off with a 2-2 draw over 2 legs but going through on away goals against Twente.
They will now face Sivasspor from Turkey in the Play-off.
