In a rather surprising turn of events, Fabio Alexandre has been appointed as the new manager of the Lions.
Alexandre succeeds Paulo Bento and will have the tough task of leading Sporting to the Portuguese title, something that hasnt been achieved since 2002.
Everything seemed to hint that André Villas Boas would be at the helm of the club, but Sporting were unable to reach an agreement with Académica and ultimately had to look elsewhere.
President Eduardo Bettencourt had suggested his preference was a young, Portuguese manager, and in the 34-year-old he has found just that.

Sporting Win Friendly Cup - Taca Jose Alvalade
Sporting Win the Taca Jose Alvalde managing to give the fans a treat with their confident attacking football
and also managing to draw with Tottenham. Sporting and Tottenham did finish level with 7 points but the goal difference seperated both teams.
This has been a great start by Fabio Alexandre to his reign and we expect to see great things from this young and talented manager.

Fabio Alexandre Arranges Intriguing Friendlies In Preperation For The League.
Fabio Alexandre has today arranged some really interesting friendlies for his team, with friendlies with Shakhtar, the current Uefa Cup/Europa League holders, on the 6th July and Real Madrid, who acquired the services of Kaka, Ronaldo and Benzema during this transfer window, on the 10th. Also, the opponents chosen to participate in the annual 'Alvalaxia Cup' have been revealed, and they are : Liverpool, Deportivo and ODEK Orzhiv, a relatively unknown team.

Will we be seing another cup lifting by Sporting?
 
Alexandre Announces First Two Signings Of The Season
Sporting have today announced that they have secured the services of Luis Guilherme for a relatively small fee of only £500. The highly-rated goalkeeper of only 17 years of age had been watched by scouts sent from Sporting and it seems that his performances have been of high standard.
Luis Guilherme when asked about moving to Sporting from Botafogo, he said ' Sporting have one of the best academies in the world and have launched many world class players such as Figo and Ronaldo. I Intend to learn alot at Sporting and stay here for alot of years.'
Also, later on in the afternoon, it was confirmed by both Sporting and Bayern that they had reached an agreement to the sale of another highly rated player, 17 year old David Alaba for £400K. There had been many rumours circling around and looks like it in the end they were right. There hasnt been a chance to speak to Alaba on his transfer but he has been quoted as saying 'The best moment of my life'. Luis Guilherme and David Alaba are both expected to be unvieled by Alexandre tomorrow at a press conference.

Sporting Beat Shakhtar And Manage To Put In A Strong Performance Against Real Madrid Despite The Loss.
Sporting have continued their excellent form during pre-season with a 2-1 win against the current holders of the Uefa Cup/Europa League with goals by Felipe Caicedo from the penalty spot and Daniel Carrico giving them the win. Olexandr Gladkyi scored the sole goal for Shakhtar. 4 days and the much anticipated game against Real Madrid was played. Although Sporting lost 2-1, the quality of passing and attacking football was noticed and Sporting managed to obtain more possession then Real. But as it is always, what matters is the goals and not the possession and Real Madrid got the goals via Cristiano Ronaldo and Esteban Granero. The sole goal by the 'Lions' was converted by Adrien.
 
Sporting Complete 3rd Signing
Sporting today have completed the signing of Pescara's 16 year old youngster Marco Verratti for a mere £300K. This is the 3rd signing made by Alexandre and it seems that the club's future is something he looks to perfect having previously signed two highly rated 17 year olds in the shape of Alaba and Luis Guilherme.
Alexandre on completing this signing had this to say: 'Verratti is a player that fascinates me, his technical ability reminds me quite alot of Ronaldo. Hopefully he can reach that same level or go one better. His best years will be with us and I'm looking forward to working with him'. Verratti has been quoted as saying that although his heart is with all Pescara fans, his tranfer to Sporting is 'a dream come true'.
