New Football Club Approved For Play

(15.4.2009) - After a long meeting with top Football Conference officials, Fareham United FC have been admitted into the Conference South division for play in the 2009-10 campaign. The meeting decided that the football club would bypass the lower levels of the English football pyramid and directly join the Conference South division. The decision came through an evaluation of the clubs skill level, training facilities, finances, and management. Fareham United has been pushing hard for their admittance to play in the sixth tier of English football since their formation in early 2008.

So who are Fareham United? The club was conceived Phil Miller in 2008 in an effort to provide a professional football team to the town of Fareham. Miller, the owner of a local real-estate company, invested heavily in the club, buying a small staff and enough players to fill the team. The club's manager, Malik Reninger, is an Englishman with past managerial experience at smaller clubs.

"We are all really excited with Conference's decision," Reninger said.

"I think this team is capable of doing great things, but it will definitely take some time."

Within weeks of their formation, interest in Fareham community and surrounding areas peaked, and a reserve team and U-18 team were established. After the team had been formed, Miller got a lease to use Cams Alders, a 5500-person football ground.
The team is compromised mostly of local players, although there is some international talent. Striker Andrew De Forest of the United States has been catching the eye of many scouts, however, he is stated that he has no intentions leaving Fareham.

The met at Cam Elders on Monday afternoon, July the 13th. They were to travel by charter bus to the Southampton Airport. Today marked the beginning of a long journey for Malik and the rest of the team as they set out for their first destination: Tahiti.

As the bus pulled out of the stadium driveway, Malik cautiously stood up to say a few words.

"Listen up, lads," he began.

"Today we start a long journey that will take us halfway across the globe. We will be visiting places no other English team has been to. I expect you all to acts as ambassadors to your team and country. As usual, curfew will be 11 P.M. local time with team breakfast at 9:00 A.M. local time."

"Also keep in mind, you must get your rest. We will be flying for about 21 hours. We will be stopping in New York, Los Angeles, Honolulu, then finally arriving in Faaa, Tahiti. Mind you we will not be deplaning during these stops, just getting fuel. It is crucial that you all rest so we can begin training upon arrival."

The bus soon arrived at the airport, and after clearing security, the team began boarding their private chartered jet. This trip was the first of it's kind for any team of this level, and it certainly wouldn't be cheap. However, all travel and hotel accommodations would be covered in appearance fees, with the team netting almost £100,000.

Malik sat near the front of the plane, next to a few of his staff members. They began briefly discussing their first opponent, AS Pirae, who had had much success in Tahiti. Eventually after formations and a starting 11 had been discussed, talk started dwindling and Malik reclined his chair and fell into a deep sleep.

He awoke as the plane was on it's final approach into New York, thanks to some moderate turbulence. The plane landed and taxied to a fueling area, refueled, and in no more then 30 minutes, it was back in the air.

Again, Malik began nodding off and slept a majority of the flight. He awoke about an hour outside of Los Angeles and caught the end of a movie playing on the entertainment system. The plane landed and refueled in LA, and again it was off on another leg of the journey.

The flight to Honolulu seemed endless for Malik. He was going over starting 11's, formations, tactics, and everything else imaginable in his head. The five hour flight dragged on for Malik, couldn't end soon enough. Eventually, however, the flight did end, and the same process of refueling took place and the final leg of the journey to Tahiti began.

The plane arrived in Tahiti at around 8 P.M. local time. After landing, the team left the plane and passed through customs. A bus met them at the front of the airport to take them to a nearby hotel where they would be staying. On the bus ride, Malik stood up and announced to the weary-looking team that they would only be practicing half the day tommorow, allowing the team to sleep in and rest up.

"Most of these teams are either in their domestic season, or have just finished up, whereas we are playing our first matches. Furthermore, we have experimenting with different players and tactics in preparation of the upcoming season. No one said any of these teams would be easy, and I am glad the boys got to experience this sort of football."

"We're playing decent football," manager Malik Reninger said.

"It's the late, dramatic equalizing goals that are hurting us. Eventually, things will start going our way and I can see us being contenders in the future."
