Pre-season

25th June 2013FC Basel has announced that manager Murat Yurkin resigned. Murat Yakin, who has been a player for the club from 1999-2000 and 2011-2006, has lead the club to win the Swiss Super League and reach semi-finals of Europa League since his takeover as manager on 15 October 2012. Both the club and the manager refused to comment on the reason but Swiss Press are rumouring that Murat Yakin is going to manage a big team in Germany.

In the same press conference , the club have announced the new manager. Club legend Alexander Frei has been appointed as the replacement, leaving his job as director of football in FC Luzern. Frei played as a forward and was the captain of the Swiss national team and is all-time leading scorer of the Swiss national football team with 42 goals in 84 games. Frei played for FC Basel since he was 16, from 1995 to 1998, and then later returns for the club and played from 2009 to 2013 and retired recently.

"It has been a dream come true" quoted Frei in the press conference. Going forward, Frei is going to bring out attack football to Basel and aim at defending the Swiss Super League title this year. Frei refused to comment about future transfer or staff changes at this moment. Swiss press report believed that the new Basel manager will have 3.2 million Euro to invest in the transfer market.

26th June 2013
Free agent Franco Zuculini joined the FC Basel shortly after the appointment of new manager. The 22-years old Argentina defensive midfielder, who played for Spainish club Zaragoza for two seasons, has decided to stay in Europe and join the Swiss club after rejecting an offer from Lanus, a club in his own country. Zuculini has signed a three year contract with Basel with weekly salary of 15,000 Euro, which is the third highest in Switzerland slightly lower than new Basel teammates Macro Streller and Valentin Stocker. With the help of fellow countryman Matias Delgado and Gaston Sauro, Zuculini expect to fit in life in Switzerland and pick up the language.

We want to make this signing quick and avoid other teams to compete with us, the new Basel manager Frei said. "Zuculini will be a great asset to the team and certainly can help the team to win points." Journalist raise questions about the rumoured interest in Chilean midfielder Marcelo Diaz from several big clubs and Frei refused to comment on that.

After a private discussion with the manager about his future, Marcelo Diaz express his wish to join a bigger club. And Frei decide to offer the player to other clubs together with two other players Stephan Andrist and Kay Voser, who have their contract expiring on June 2014. Arlind Ajeti is the only player whose contract is expiring on June 2014, given a new offer of 4,000 Euro per week until June 2015. Also, a numbers of youngerster including Kwang-Ryon Pak, Musa Araz and Aleksandar Zarkovic are listed for loan in order to let them have some first team chances. Lastly, new fitness coach Andrea Corrain and coach Erich Hurzeler has joined FC Basel.

30th June 2013
Basel announced that Marcelo Diaz is leaving the club for Dutch club PSV Eindhoven for a fee of 7.5 million Euro. The Chilean midfielder joined Basel in 2012 for a fee of 3.1 million Euro. The fans are extremely happy with the decision and feel that the club has done well to get such a profit from the sales which can be used on other areas. Also, full back Kay Voser is joining England club Blackburn for a fee of 1.9 million Euro. Given the player's injury proneness and expiring contract, the fans are very satisfied with the deal.

Manager Alexander Frei revealed that he is looking for new players to strengthen the team, especially young talented backups on the wing back and striker position. Rumours from Swiss press said that 20 years old Austrian right back Patrick Farkas is the major target of Frei since Basel agents are spotted in Mattersburg, Austria.

Margairaz is the second free player joining Basel since manager Alexander Frei take over the team a week ago.

Meanwhile, Swiss winger Stephan Andrist left Basel to join Italian club Torino for a reported fee of 1.8 million Euro.
