What are the first things you do when you join a new team/start a new game on FM?

Is there anything or anyone that you always do or sign?

For me, even before I check my squad and see what I need, I change team settings to let the Assistant Manager take friendlies and organise them.

Next, I look in my reserves and view->contract info and try and sell the higher earning players who won't get a look in througout the year regardless.

After that I check my staff. Normally I will sign Ray Clemence as he is a good unattached GK Coach. I also normally put out a job advert for every position just incase someone better pops up. If needs be I will release my poorer coaches and staff asap.

Then, I sort my tactic -without adding the players into their positions.

After that I do a team report, and see what my *** man says about the team. If he reccommends a player I do normally take a good luck at them. I also normally try and address the issues and weaknesses he spots.

Next ask for a Parent (In Champ or below) or a feeder (Prem).

Next I go for my "always buys". If in L1 or below I always go for Ian Walker & Denis Alibec. Champ or below its Stephen Appiah & Possebon on loan. If in the premiership I will take a look at what I can get, although I have only started in the prem once and played 8 games and got bored.

I'll shut up now, I am at work and fancied making this thread, hopefully will get some good stuff and some good idea's for other 'Managers' to follow up on their own game...|)

This should be an interesting thread.

I always start by looking at my finances to see what I have to play with.
I then check the friendlies to see how many have been arranged and cancel any that are going to mean 2 in 3 days or if I have more than 5 friendlies set up.
Next I check out the assistant's view of the team to see what he feels is lacking in the team. Then I check through the whole squad, checking their stats and what the coaches think of them.
Depending on what club I am depends on what I do next. If I am a LL team, then I check to see if we have a parent team and, if not, request one. At a bigger club, I will check the feeder teams and cancel links with any I don't see the point of.
Next is to start Buying/selling players. I never really have any particular players in mind, although I do import the Potential Stars shortlist (although as a lower league team, I can never sign them). I release those players that are **** and I can afford to buy off. Then I search for players I can sign.
I also go through the reserve teams of the Premier League teams to find decent players and offer to loan them. Most of the time the player won't come to my team but occassionally they do.
Thats it really

I usually just tell the board im gunna win the league, then with the money they give me fiddle with the wage budget making it huge then sign young guns, sort of a wenger policy. set friendlies and transfer negotiations to assiantant(apart from big players who i wil negotiate with myself) then if im a big enough club get pat rice and gary lewin to come as assistant and pysio

A lot of the time it depends on which team I'm managing. If they are a poorer team in a lower division, I'll straight away fire most of the coaching team and assistant manager. Bring in some new staff.

Then I'll sort all my players by the assistant's recommended rating and do what I can to flog the players at the lower end.

Then I'll probably do what the rest of you have already said.

madird: buy sakho, balotleli, vela and nkoulou, sell all the poor guys that won't play.
Insert my tactic
Get bored after six seasons.

afc telford: check the squad myself, write down the starting eleven.
organize league frindlies for loads of money
make a defensive tactic
after two games switch to an offensive tactic
after a wonderful first leg I go in a ten games without win
crush my laptop
then ask for more money to bring in coaches and palyers
request is denied, crush the laptop again
fire all players that nobody wants and are always angry
sign old players who look goodn then drop their stats to BSN level

I like this thread, could be interesting as nursemorphhttp://www.fm-base.co.uk/forum/member.php?u=40632 said usually let my assistant manager handle contract renewals and friendly games.

Now I usually always buy Srna, Balotelli and then it depends on money whom I buy.

I sell players that are poor to get more money, basically get the squad as I want.

Same as Redders I get new coaches, always Ray Clemence as he is unattached. Then I get coaches with high attribute in defending, attacking, tactical etc.

I change my tactic.

One additional question since it is about something you always do..
Is there any special position you stay in while playing the matches.. Let's say you were playing the finals in Champions League and you are loosing 1-0, do you minimize the window or sit in the chair all the time?
As what I do, I often hold around my right wrist with my left hand while having the right hand on the mouse.. And in many games because I consider it luck.. It's kind of a superstition or something :)

Check my finances and sort my tactics. Evaluate my squad and see what positions need improved and who I can sell. Then I sort my coaches. Then see how my squad does in the friendlies.

Like Redders i let my Ast Manager take control of Friendly's arrange them and do the team talks. I make sure i have the best youth coach managing the youth team

Then i will do training usually tug and clear auto which coaches do what.

Check the funds, wages and any debts the club has.

Look at the reserves for players that might be worth having in the first team and list anyone i do not want or think will be good enough. then check the under 18/21's and put the best of the bunch in my reserves.

Check the first team and see who i want/do not want

I do not like to buy the same players over and over again. My signings come from scout reports and checking who is interested, transfer lists, Media gossip or my asst mans recomends.

Sort tactics.....play

I set assistant manager to take control of friendlies have a look at the players and sell off any that dont look good then i get a feeder or parent club depending if im in a high or low league do a player search and then if im a big team i try and sign one or two big players and a few rising stars and send them off on loan

My career games start in the lower leagues, where wage budgets are tight so this is my usual route:

Check coaches for 'works with youngsters' ability - the highest will handle the U18 team. The AM can take the reserves. Check their abilities and contracts. New contracts to anyone within a year of contract end who I feel has the attributes to help out - make the offer as a 'full coach' as there's little point having specific coaches when you're so limited with staff. Check physio's contract to see if it's possible to recruit any more, same with scouts (I use the ingame advertise position for this). Set one scout to scout next opposition, the rest (if any) to areas allowed, focusing on the nation I'm playing in first and then moving further out.

I go to Team settings and do the following: allow AM to arrange friendlies (tiresome task), set all teams to play with match tactics, turn off the ability for AM to offer contracts to young players - I'll handle that. Set AM to reserves, coach with highest work with youngsters attribute to work with U18s.

As I have a style of play/tactics I know work for me, I go through the squad. I check the players out properly - checking their attributes and coach reports. Decide who I want to keep and who needs to go - I divide those who need to go into two groups, those I can get rid of straight away (or need to go straight away) and those who will eventually go but who I can't risk getting rid of yet. Put those who need to go straight away up for sale.

I then check the team and how I think they'll work in my tactics - who'll play where, and again check to see what positions need improvement first. I consider the priorities to be in the following order: Goalkeeper, strikers, defence and then midfield and finally 'squad'. If my tactics weren't defensively sound, then I'd probably focus on building from the back up but I know that my tactics are sound enough defensively providing the keeper is solid.

Next step is contracts. Check who needs a new contract at the end of the season. I'll offer a three year deal to a player who I really want to keep hold off (four years for exceptional youngsters under 24), two years to decent team members who I may want to offload in the medium term. If I'm not sure about the player, I'll wait until later on in the season before offering him a contract - usually if I'm not sure it's because they might be useful squad players but not first team regulars.

Then I check for players who I can possibly sign. Having checked the squad I know what the priorities are - if I need a striker, then I have to get a striker - no point signing another three right backs if I've got two who are adequate for the moment until I've got the players I really do need. I try not to get swayed by spur of the moment availability. I also check for any players at a 'parent club' who I might be able to get on a year's loan for free - these will add to the squad if nothing else, same for asking the AM to check for loan signings.

I try to keep within budget (although I do tend to go over at first if players aren't getting sold quickly or I can't cancel the contracts for free soon enough), so I figure that the rest of the finances can take care of themselves for the immediate future.

Then I go back to the player screens and set up individual training regimes for them - I want rounded players really, so I focus on trying to even out the weaknesses a bit, focusing on tactics more than anything as my tactics work better with players who aren't just big, strong, fast and stupid. I'll also auto-allocate the coaches, remembering to do this every time one of them signs a new contract.

Erm, that's pretty much it before pressing 'continue'.
