In his most recent blog post, Miles Jacobson was talking about the patching process for FM11.

Here is the short version:

  • Release day patch - includes some updates (Liverpool takeover ect.) and the Dark version of the default skin
  • A December patch that will be mainly focused on bug fixing
  • A February/March patch with transfer updates ect.

I might wait until the December patch before I start any serious, longer term games if this be the case.

I won't be able to resist starting a big career once I've got the game, tbh. :P

Does this mean the first patch comes with the actual game, or that I'm going to have to download it separately?

If you are getting the Steam version, steam will automatically update the game for you. For the retail version I'm assuming you would have to download the patch from the website and install it the old fashioned way ;)

Once I've bought the game, obviously I'll start a game but I won't be taking it serious, I'll wait till December once they've brought out the patch that hopefully will get rid of all the bug's if not most of them. Until then I'll just be getting use to the game, and scouting players. I'll actually start playing the game once that patch is out.

I'm not fussed about waiting for the patch with all the transfer updates.

Hmm... not sure whether to install via Steam or the traditional way. Pros and cons anyone?

I love Steam so I will probably be getting it that way - I have only bought 1 boxed game (Starcraft II CE) over the last 2 years because of it. You can't beat buying games from your chair :P

Steam you must be connected to the internet to play.

Non steam you have to install patches yourself. (But we make it easy by linking them with full instructions)

With Steam you don't actually have to be online to play, if you try load the game and as the start it won't work, if you wait it gives you the option to launch in "Offline mode"

Yeah, but that often gives people alot of problems and won't allow them to go offline at times.

Either way, you still have to be online to download the patches, but yes, you can play the game still in offline mode.

That is not entirely correct. Steam has an offline mode which allows you to play, well, offline (duh :P) but also means steam doesn't try to patch itself every 2 seconds... :)

Steam also has its other advantages, integrated social features, achievements and it is also usually cheaper than the boxed copy.

You can also backup your game files and login to steam on any computer with steam and your library will be there. You can use the backup to quickly install your games on your various machines.

Might go with Steam. My Mac often just spits out the disk when I put it in, though I've already preordered with Play.com. Is there a code on the back of the case that I can use to register via Steam?

Probably not. To get the Steam copy you will have to install Steam and order it in the online store.

Once you put the disk in, it will ask you if you would like to install the game via Steam. So just click yes.

It did that on Fm10 anyway, so I assume it'll do it for Fm11.

Ah, Ok I bought my copy directly from the steam store so I was unaware of this option.

I think I will play as Schalke first before doing anything serious like LLM.

if it does spit the disc out you can register the CD key on the back of the manual with steam and it should start downloading.

I'll probly have ago with someone like Shalke, Palermo etc.... Then delve into the relmes of LLM.

Sorry but what does it mean like fix bugs, I know it means he'll fix the problems with the game but what problems should their be?

Anything really. There could be issues causing crash dumps, ME bugs, exploits, the list goes on.

Glad they are providing the dark skin, the default one sucks !!

demo has definately wet my appetite, but will be glad when the full versions arrives ..

roll on the 5th !!!!

It's deflating when anyone puts out a game aknowledging it's bugged, but at least SI are fessing up & we're all used to the patch system by now with the Football Manager series. It's understandable with such a complex simulation.

Fingers crossed FM2011 is as playable & as stable as poss...
