Just thought this would be handy for people wondering what version to download.

What is the Football Manager Demo?
I'll start with the facts:

  • Every year the demo is available in 2 flavors; strawberry is the full package and complete experience, while vanilla is the light version that exists as an alternative for reduced size download.
  • With the demo you can play half a season of gameplay, and the saved games from the demo will be compatible with the full release of the game.

How Vanilla is different from the Strawberry?
Alright, now what are the differences between the 2 flavors? We still don't know about FM 2011, but we do know what happened with FM 2010 Demo. So here it is:

  • Strawberry (roughly 1GB)
    * Full Assets: including player pictures, club logos, competition logos, etc for where we have the license. Full pitch textures, stadiums and sounds.
    * In-game languages: English, Danish, Dutch, French, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish
    * Quickstarts: England, Scotland, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Brazil, Turkey, Wales, N. Ireland
  • Vanilla (roughly 290MB)
    * Stripped Assets: including no player pictures, club logs, competition logos, sounds, etc
    * In-game language: English language only
    * Quickstarts: England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland

At first I thought that most people would only go for the strawberry edition, because it's the full experience. All those years I've been getting that edition anyway. But then, I got some replies that proved me wrong, and suggested that vanilla edition is still somewhat popular for various reasons.

Strawberry VS Vanilla
Let's see a summary of the points raised as to which flavor you should consider downloading.

Strawberry Points:

  • Full assets, which means all pictures, logos, stadiums and sounds that will be on the retail
  • More in-game languages, while vanilla only has English
  • More quickstarts, while vanilla only has the UK ones

Vanilla Points:

  • You're on a slow internet connection and it's 3x times faster to download (e.g. 56k modem, holy **** I can't believe people use that nowadays)
  • Most people junk their saves played on the demo, and start new ones on the retail version
  • You only want to play in England to start with, so Vanilla fits that bill
  • You just want to see what the new features are
  • All the graphics on the full game would be replaced by Megapack variants and any game you start on the Retail release would have a lot more leagues and a custom database selected, so no point in continuing a game from the demo
  • Your laptop only has 30GB hard disk space, so you want the smallest version

Waiting for the demo, will go for Strawberry, so I can write some in depth guides for release.

Also, will be able to look at some of the possible talents as well.

Certainly a Newcastle guide, and also some graphic ones(if anything has changed.

I find it a little weird I'm sat eating Vanilla Ice-cream with Strawberry's....

Will be downloading Strawberry for sure!

definitely strawberry, so i can do a manchester united guide and re-create some modern day tactics for inter barca etc

Strawberry for sure, again. I don't need to worry about PC space, my PC's a beaaaast. :D
Probably get bored of 'Pool's **** finances and manage Bournemouth.

probably the strawberry edition, gunna manage Barcelona to avoid the **** hole of Liverpool :P
also, has there been any word of when it will come out? the demo i mean...

I'll be going vanilla I think. Does that mean Germany aren't on the strawberry version? If so, Im surprised nations such as Norway are ???

Miles and Matt have said the demo will be out when the game is ready. the demo isnt meant to be some sort of beta as some people think, its a taster of the full product. barring any imprtant needed fixes, it would be identical to the full game. still at least a week off

definetley strawberry, so i can assess teams, tactics weak roles etc. and have a good spurs run!
Also might do a guide :)

Vanilla, just want to see new features and I will start new game on full version anyway

Probs Strawberry, so I can write a guide for every team on the game.

.. oh wait, I will leave that to The Shots.

Raspberry. Someone had to..

Will go for Strawberry I think, shouldn't have any computer issues, and might be doing some BETA testing for a realistic Arsenal tactic by Mantralux

hehehe.

Strawberry it has to be but I wish it was this Friday!! Come out Mr Demo^^)

I'll be going with strawberry. Want to check out the new updates before deciding whether to buy now or wait until prices drop.

Those terms seem mixed up.

Vanilla is the expression usually given to a game which is in its 'off-the-shelf' mode, without any changes/mods/updates.

Either way, Strawberry for me.

Going for Stawberry too. just hope my laptop can take it. Cant wait for demo.

neither as i never play the demo as i see it as pointless

i wait till the full game to play it
