After some tinkering, I've come up with a 3-2-2-1-2 (or 3-5-2!) tactic that really works - see attached screenshots which show how well it's gone for me playing as Hull. There was an element of luck insofar as I had a really good buy out of Assem Allam, so have been able to buy some good players like Chancel Mbemba, Tiago Ilori and Moussa Sissoko, but these have been supplemented with some bargains (Calum Patterson, Leigh Griffiths, Kuki, Patrick Bamford, Fran Villabla, Harry Arter (who came after Bournemouth got relegated) and Bingourou Kamara) and some excellent youth promotions - Josh Tymon top of that list.
I'm very conscious of the Brexit element of FM17, so have deliberately targeted British players, however have brought in some young foreigners as well, just on the off-chance...
