Although I am 40, I am a relative noob to soccer/football. I have generally been a fan of American Football all of my life, which I understand in pretty good detail; not so much for soccer. Its not so much lacking complete knowledge, but that I certainly don't get as much out of the game as I could.

I have read lots of guides, which have been helpful, but I still feel I am lacking. For example, I often find that I get players based on cost or stars or maybe a few attributes, but I don't consider the large picture. Does he really fit my plans? What are my plans?

This is very open-ended, and for that I apologize, but I am anxious to read whatever you want to offer.

I feel I have had some success with some teams, but almost in spite of myself rather than a true management achievement.

We've all been in the "buying on stars and cost" phase.

A key point to remember is that a players cost is an indication of his contract value, not his skill level. Buying an expensive player just means you're buying a player on a huge wage, not nessesarily that he's really good.

When it comes to stars; ask yourself "Why has the scout given him those stars". It's only when you litterally stop yourself, stare at all 30 odd stats and figure out why he's valued at 4 stars will it make any sense to you. It's like any game, to really understand the finer details, you need to figure out how it works.

i'll try to explain evrything
1. Let assistant manager tc of all the interviews, press conference, trainings etc. This can be set in staff responsiblities.
2. Download some good tactics on the share and download tactic section of fm-base. If you have a good team, download attacking tactic or if you have a small team download counter attack. P.s home is mostly for attack and away is defense in evry teams case except for barca, bayern and madrid imo.
3. Give the responsibility of opposition instruction to a good defensive coach
4. Let assistant manager tc of the match day training.
5. For strikers - look at Ronaldo or Lewandowski or benzema
- finishing
-cmposure
-pace
-dribbling
-heading
-jumping reach are all helpful
6. attack mid- look at ozil - iniesta
-dribbling
-passing
-decisions
-composure
7. wingers - douglas costa
- dribbling
-pace
-accel
-cross
8. inside forwards- basically wingers attributes merged with strikers
9. centre mid - pogba is perfect
- passing
-decisions
-composure
- bit of tackling
10. defensive mid - same as mid except with defensive enhancements like
- heading
-jump reach
-tacking
-marking
ps some good defensive mid might not have some essential attributes like heading, so this prevents them from winning headers during goal kicks e.g
11. centre backs - john terry, thiago silva
- heading
- jump reach
- marking
-tackiling
-strength
- pace is also good
12. full backs - basically wingers with defensive attributes
- tack
- mark
-pace
-cross

basically technical attributes are what the player will do on the field and how good he will be at it, mental is what he will think while doing the technical attributes and physical is the physical attributes of the player.

hope this helps

Thanks for the replies so far. This has been helpful.

Are there positions or roles that are not effective, or is that based more on how it fits in the larger tactical scheme?

For example, the last few times I have added strikers, it turns out the one I thought would be a backup was the goal scoring machine. The starter was better overall, but not the same goal scoring threat.
