After listening to TalkSport yesterday after AVB's sacking from Tottenham, they had George Graham on and was discussing how football management is changing. He said that more and more football managers are becoming Head Coaches, and in fact have very little/no say in which players are bought - and instead are instructed to just make the best of which players the Sporting Director chooses to buy.

Do you think this is going to affect the realism of the Football Manager series? Will SI have to introduce a 'Head Coach' option, where you work under these conditions and under the instruction of the Director of Football/Sporting Director?

Or, does this already happen if you manage some clubs, and I didn't know about it?

It doesn't happen, and to be honest I doubt it ever will, as the game is called 'football manager', not 'football coach'. Besides, I think transfers are part of the game that is the most fun/interesting for alot of people.

I highly doubt it would happen either, inspite of what happens irl. Transfers are the most interesting aspect about FM, and if I doubt very many people would want to manage a club based on whatever players the AI decides to bring in. And that aspect isn't present in all clubs irl - I'm guessing it depends on what stature you hold with the club.

I agree.
But I have always wanted a "Club-owner"-game.
Where you role was director+sports director, so you had to buy players and hire personal and running the club. (But without the football-coach part).
I think it would be borrowing after a short while, but I would still like to see a game like this - some sort of Football Tycoon ;)

Isnt this what the DoF does? You can just not sign any players and let your DoF if you want to experience these conditions.

I play FM now as a Director of Football.

Sign players, coaches and a really good assistant manager then instant result almost every match

As a Sunderland fan, I think a sporting director isn't the worst idea in football. I've seen many managers in recent years buy overpriced rubbish who start, then flop, then the manager gets the blame, and rightly so. The problem is those players remain longer than the managers and the team becomes incredibly disjointed with players quickly becoming alienated.

A sporting director like De Fanti or whoever Spurs guy is means that transfers may not be the first choice for the current manager, but things never get out of control. Well, unless you hire a manager like Poyet who requires players with the ability to pass the ball his way...

In terms of FM, I could try to get along with one but I love being in charge of as much as possible. I'd even take control of the kit sponsor if I could. Why not implement it into the game anyway, just to see if a few people enjoy that challenge. I've not played any of the challenges or short version of the game, I don't even know what it's called but I don't mind it being available to others.

In Portugal, there's not the figure of manager, but of a head coach.

The club's structure will manage everything besides the senior football team. Coaches have a word on transfers, but that's all.

As iamauser said above, there is already the option to let your DoF handle all transfers incoming and outgoing within the staff responsibilities. It is something that I considered when I recently started my Monaco save, but I ended up wimping out.

I think the manager here is to try to emulate Fergunson's way of doing things and not the other way around.

Playing this game as a coach will drive you insane!

Well, depends on different people's choices, but I agree with that. It'll be crazy to let the AI manage stuff, because it tends to under-utilize players a lot! So when I already have 4 strikers or defenders, it may look to bring in some more of both, because of some weird calculations. And yes, did see this happen, to Man United, when I was managing another club :\
