"What is a club in any case?? ?Not the buildings or the directors or the people who are paid to represent it.? It?s not the television contracts, get-out clauses, marketing departments or executive boxes.??It?s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city.? ?It?s a small boy clambering up stadium steps for the very first time, gripping his father?s hand, gawping at that hallowed stretch of turf beneath him and, without being able to do a thing about it, falling in love.?
Sir Bobby Robson.

Outside of Spain you could be forgiven to see the beautiful game as money driven and dominated by the two giants which battle toe to toe every season, you could be forgiven to see Spanish football as badly supported by it's supporters but have you really seen it all past the glitz and glamour as Barcelona and Real Madrid. Down there in the lower reaches and some would say the bottom half of la liga, you will find some of Europe's most passionate supporters: Betis, Osasuna, Villareal and down in the second league... recreativo de Huelva SAD. This great club is heralded as the first club in Spain, not Barca, not Real but a small but mighty club near the Portuguese border. The small town of Huelva is not the hot bed of football it used to be now. You stroll through it's stereotypical Spanish streets of dusty buildings and lights turned of during Siesta and you see young boys playing in these dusty streets wearing Barcelona and Madrid shirts. Superstars such as Messi and Ronaldo on the backs of the Blaugrana and Blanco's kits. Why are they not wearing the blue and white of their local team? why is Messi on their backs but not star defender Fernando Vega? Don't they know this clubs proud history? Surly the first club in Spain is quite a big achievement what the youths of today should take with pride!

That's what I've flown in for, to change the young people of Huelva's minds and alliance to glorified clubs miles away. As the taxi drove away from the city and down past the beach you could almost be mistaken that the stadium was in the middle of nowhere. walls with graffiti covered the outside of the tiny ground, 21,000 fill this stadium week in and week out only to be disappointed. It's time to change that! It is time bring this club back to the top!

Good luck mate, will be following.

Catalonia- the province of Spain who want to be free! The capital of Catalonia is of course Barcelona, the historic city famous for Gaudi the artist, la Ramblas and it's football club. FC Barcelona is undoubtedly the biggest club in world football, people from Canada to Cambodia know the famous names like Messi, Xavi, Iniesta and Fabregas. It is a football mans dream to watch a game at the famous Camp Nou stadium which holds 99,000 spectators. This city is where I am currently trying to tie a deal down for former Celtic defender Glen Loovens, my scout compiled a report on the lad and said he could help us achieve our goal of finishing top half in our season of transition. Our wage budget was not large and his notorious agent has a thin patience. Walking into a small room with shady lighting just outside the city the defender and his agent sat at a desk. The negotiations were long but somehow we pulled of a great deal for the football club. It was time to head home with our new man and get ready for the pescara friendly game next week.

One week later

The sun beamed down on the old stadium, I named a weakened side to go out and play against our Italian visitors. As we walked out the tunnel only 4,000 fans were in one of our stands... it was disappointing to say the least. We controlled the game but in the final 30 minutes Pescara pulled back from our two goal lead to win the game. I took it easy on the lads as its only a friendly but inside I was gutted. It's time to get back into training for the Murcia game at the start of the season, it will be tough but we need to start pushing towards the top half early.

Murcia 3-1 Huelva

It was a tough experience for the lads, we got up at the crack of dawn and set off for Murcia. The bus ride took a toll on the players as we rolled through the endless hills of Spain, we finally reached Murcia but we drove around the city centre looking for a sign that the stadium may be close, eventually we reached an industrial park with the same name as the stadium. In the distance the recognizable hills rolled into the distance and as we turned a corner there stood the stadium. It is the most impressive of all the second division stadiums holding 31,000 spectators. The bus parked outside the stadium and we made our way into the refurbished changing rooms. It was a calm atmosphere as all the players got ready to go out and play. Words were exchanged and we set off to play the first game of the new regime.

Walking out of the tunnel we were greeted by a huge ray of sun, as I looked around a measly 11,000 spectators turned out to see their local team. I took my place in the dugout as the players assembled into a huddle to a chorus of boo's. We set up in a 4-4-2 formation and the game kicked off. The first 15 minutes we were all over them. Relentless attacks were met by poor finishing by our forwards. On the 13th minute Joselu was put through by Eziquiel only to cannon it of the bar from 18 yards. On the 17th minute we easily lost the ball in the centre of the field, their midfielder played a hopeful long ball towards star forward Kike who was one on one with our keeper. He took two touches before rounding the keeper and nestling it in to the bottom corner, he wielded away towards the supporters as they celebrated their 1-0 lead. They started to dominate and we were punished on 23 mins as the cross came in and Kike buried his second from 6 yards. We looked deflated but we held on until half time and the players took their respected seats.

I encouraged the lads that we could get this game back and to show the same performance I saw in those first 15 mins. That didn't change the atmosphere, those two goals hurt us and there may not be a way back.

The second half was an improvement, we held our own and even had a few pops at goal, that was until the cross came in and the deflection gave them a 3-0 lead... demolition. For some unexplained reason that awoke something in our lads and only 1 min later the corner came in and Joselu knocked in a header, we kept going at it and in the final minute we hit the bar from a free-kick. 3-1 was the final score and there is more work to do before Sporting next week.

We remained silent on the bus and as we finally arrived back home I climbed back in my Audi and headed off to my apartment in the city centre, I needed a good nights rest before training in the morning.
