Vauxhall Motors

Founded in 1963, Vauxhall Motors are a semi-professional English club currently playing in the Blue Square North. The club play their home games at RivacrePark and possess basic training facilities and a basic youth setup. The club are affectionately called the Motor Men.

How does a manager with no experience get a job like this?

Quite rare actually, but if you are a department leader for Vauxhall Cars and have managerial badges its will be not as hard as some might find. I suppose i got this job because Vauxhall are not exactly a rich club so they are willing to look at anybody I guess.

An interview with a twist…

Well my boss of my store John Stapleton took the interview with the club’s lawyer Frank Knewbolt I suppose the club had a few of them lawyers. The reason why the chairman isn’t conducting the interview is because he is interviewing real experienced managers so I would doubt he would interview his employee.

Things started well but it wasn’t long before some tricky questions started coming my way for example…

Frank: “How do u think you would deal with complaining players, asking for first team football”.

Me: “Oh well Urgh, I guess I would bring him aside or my office if I got given one and speak with him, tell him that he is getting chances in Reserve matches or training even, do u think that would be okey”?

Frank looked at me and said: “I don’t know you tell me”

I thought it was fine so I left it and hoped he would start the next question, but they both stood up and I shook hands with frank and John while I went back to my desk, filling paperwork that I didn’t really want to do.

Frank and John came out of the room a few minutes later Frank was in front leading the way down the stairs, while john at the back was nodding his head miming “You the Man”.

After Frank left John came to my desk and told me what they discussed in the office after I left.

John: “ Ey, he told me that you had a good chance because you kept a level head in the interview and he would put in a good recommendation for you, Get in There”.

The first time in my life have I had butterflies I couldn’t wait till he got back to me.

Loosing hope that I once had?

3 days later and no response from Frank or anyone involved in Vauxhall Motors FC I was beginning to loose hope but the manager slot has still not been filled, But it was not until I got home when I had four missed calls on my home phone.

I did what anyone would do and I typed in the number 1471 and I recorded the number to ring them back, But as I was half way through recording it the phone rang so I quickly answered it and I heard a very sexy female voice I thought it was someone from Friends Re-United but she said

Mysterious Woman: “Hello is that James McLaughlin, you had an interview recently for Vauxhall FC, and I’ve got some relatively good news that you’re the one we’ve been looking for. Mr Bartlam (The chairman) wishes to speak with you tomorrow morning would that be okey Mr McLaughlin.”

I was Shell shocked but she was still waiting for my answer I replied

“Yeah Yeah That’s fine is it at the Rivacre”

As I was waiting for the response from her, I heard a manly voice in the background muttering Rosy stop nodding I was absolutely cracking up after the phone call I was ringing loads of people family & friends and anyone who I had on my phone I was so chuffed I could hardly believe it.

Meeting

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The meeting!

I arrived at the Rivacre fairly early before my meeting with the chairman and I took the time to take a walk around the stadium and museum it wasn’t really that good to be honest, on one side there was pictures of the stadium in its old state and new and some interesting facts and souvenirs for sale and on the other side there were facts about the local area. I also took my time to sit in the touchline chairs mind you they weren’t exactly leather seats but they were sweet. I glanced at my watch to see the time was 9:49am it was fairly accurate so I headed to the Reception area. The man there had a name tag he was called Eden, I doubt he knew I was going to be the new manager all he probably knew was that I was having a meeting with the chairman. I suppose the chairman has loads of meetings.

While I was waiting for the nod to go into the double doors named “Staff Only”. When I was invited into the office I swiftly sat down after shaking the hand of Mr Bartlam he seemed fairly positive big smile on his face.

He Began to congratulate me on my interview and how Frank the Lawyer spoke good of me. I Began to feel Bigheaded but then I snapped out of it and realised that that would be the last thing to do.

The Chairman introduced himself as Alan Bartlam and that he is the chairman, he went on to give me a First Team Sheet

He told me the next training session was tomorrow and I should start my new job by having a chat with my assistant Anthony Wright who is also a player, ha-ha Imagine that I ask him if to give me a recommended line up and he’s always going to put him in.

After the meeting I arranged a meeting with Anthony who wasn’t far from the chairman’s office he showed me the helm, my office, photocopying room and some other rooms like finance office and things like that.

My Office was Snazzy it had a button that I could talk to my receptionist, I was keen to test it out when on the other end I heard that same voice that I heard on the phone in my apartment I then asked her to arrange all staff i.e. Coaches and internal staff as well like website managers but there weren’t a lot of staff here at Vauxhall so the meeting was just to Re-assure them over there jobs.

Meeting the team…
Me and Anthony devised the plan for tonight’s training that I will hold, I plan to meet the players, secondarily I want to remember their names and thirdly keep the peace.

By the time training came I was already in my gear, it was a soccer world jacket, it’s the only thing I’ve got until my order for a Vauxhall pack comes through from the mail, I ordered it off the Vauxhall website fairly cheap but I got no manager discount.

Me and Anthony we’re waiting for the lads to turn up and when they did they were full of smiles and congratulations I wanted to train the lads on the Rivacre pitch because I wanted to really and it was no hassle because the stadium is right next to the training ground.

As time went by and I was watching the lads do the fitness I set for them I was thinking about my upcoming game against Dartford, they don’t play in the football league or the Blue square premier, I think they lay in tier 7 or 8 of football in England the should prove a difficult task for me as it will probably be a close affair.

After the fitness session I took the lads inside for Abit more fitness to really test them and so I could separate the fit from the fatty’s.
After training Anthony compiled a fitness report I guess it was to remind me who is the fittest. After training I was trying to memorize the lads’ names by looking at their profile on the website and then saying their names, it was fairly to be honest.

sounds like itsgoing to be a good story im going to follow this ;)

Thanks im going to be doing something like 3 updates a day from now on

Darkford

Vauxhall V Dartford

I still cant get over the fact that I am the manager of a major football club it does really give me butterflies and today is the day when I manage my first official game, I looked at Dartford scouted information and they look like a relatively weak team and I think we should beat them but only with my superb tactics.

I was at the ground preparing my notes that I had made and waiting for my team to arrive

It was 1 hour to kick off and everyone had arrived I could hear the crowd through the thin walls, im not saying there were loads of people watching the game but they were passionate fans at that.

I went through the tactics and named the line-up

I was looking at the odds and sky bet made Dartford the favourites I was fuming and they also stated that Dartford had more quality in their line up. I realised that didn’t matter, the only thing that mattered was the result and I was determined to get one.

14th minute and we had our first chance on goal Anthony Wright Passed the ball to Egerton from a throw-in, Egerton launched the ball from just outside the area and it skimmed the left hand post just going out.

25th minute and Chris Lane Gave and absolute cracker of a long pass to Grice who got held back by the Dartford defender, so it was a free kick form just outside the area. Chris Lane stepped up to take the free kick, he launched it towards the goalkeeper blindside but the keeper got a tip to it to send it out wide for a corner.

After having most of the possession in the first half and not scoring I seriously wasn’t happy so I decided to tweak my tactic to all out attack and to bring the two wingers Moogan and Grice into the game.

58th minute and Hunt concedes a PENALTY, Great that’s all I ******* need my first game as a Gaffer and I loose to a lesser side, I was hoping they didn’t score, and guess what they did. Right down the middle straight at Coates the goalkeeper he got a touch to it and through his hands, I hope this just a temporary glitch my team.

85th minute and a glimmer of hope Grice goes past a defender and another one and another, he’s through on goal its destined for goal, Grice shoots and it fizzes past the post.

I was on my feet through Grice’s little run and I was hoping he would score but unfortunately we didn’t.

The final whistle goes and I shake the other managers hand which he had a Massive grin on his face, I made my way to the changing rooms I made sure I was the first one their so I could quickly gather my thoughts to what I was going to say in the team talk. I just didn’t know what to say really. Finally everyone was sat down in a circle in their chairs and me in the middle I just came out and blurted

” Good Run Out Lads The Result Doesn’t Matter, It’s only a Friendly”

Surprisingly the Team didn’t take much notice of my team talk most of them where genuinely disappointed with the result especially young Grice who was sat with his head in his hands well not in his hands but he was disappointed he did well.

” Well done Lads, Especially You Grice You were Superb on the flank” I said

“Right lads I’ll see you tomorrow in training its going to be fairly tiring for you” I thought Id say that so they would be prepared for some brutal fitness.
