Hi,

I just bought FM 2009 today. I'm on XP Home. I've installed it but no luck. When I try and run it from the icon on my desktop, the Steam thing comes up and asks me about the multiplayer CD key. I go to launch, it says preparing to launch..............and then nothing.

So, I've tried going into program files => steam => steamapps => common => football manager 2009 => fm.exe

and it says:

"This application has failed to start because d3dx9_37.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

So I assume this is a direct x thing. So I tried to install the latest Direct X. But I can't because I'm apparently not the administrator (despite the fact that I am). Plus I checked and Direct X 9 is installed and is apparently working (after testing it).

Basically I'm at a loss.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Steve

Yeah, I gave that a go. No luck. Tried creating a new admin account in Safe Mode but that wasn't a success either.

Just thought I'd update this in case anyone else has the same trouble as me.

Basically, the problem FM was having was:

"This application has failed to start because d3dx9_37.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

Others seem to have reported this issue - the solution is to download the latest version of Direct X. This didn't work for me, at least not initially, because I had a further problem with Direct X. I apparently couldn't install the new version as I wasn't an administrator, despite the fact that this is incorrect.

So, to cut and extremely long, 3 day story, short, I discovered that the problem was with a file entitled ADVPACK.dll. This should be found in the System32 folder, but wasn't there for some reason (no real idea why - an imperfect installation of Windows maybe). So I got someone to email me a copy of the file, put it into the relevant folder and was then able to install Direct X and from this point, get FM going.

This sounds fairly arcane, but I've done a bit of searching and I don't seem to be the only person who has suffered at the hands of this ADVPACK file. So, hopefully this may be of use to someone else in the future.

Now I just have to get Rochdale into the Premiership.

Thanks for replying with your fix. Many users never return to let us know how things turn out.
