In my new club I have started without a general manager,

Do I need to hire one? And if so - why?

You mean Assistant Manager? If so, it is highly recommended because of lots of stuff, like training, tactics, exc

No, he means General Manager.

And no, you don't need one. I don't hire General Managers or DOF's. Pretty pointless. I like full controll.

If I'm not mistaken, General Manager is the name FM gives Directors of Football if you set the game to U.S. English (as opposed to UK). Kind of a misnomer too considering a GM in American sports holds much more power than DOF. Anyway, this mostly comes down to personal preference, but he doesn't do anything you can't do (better) manually, and I don't hire one.
