I am in my first season with Rotherham in the NPower 2nd. Things started off fairly well and I have been in the promotion places most of the season. But things have not been going well through the middle of the season with getting too many draws and the occasional defeat. Usually I take the lead and then concede late. What's really annoying is my team plays really well for 80 mins and then throw it away in the last 10. All too often from a long range shot or a ridiculous defensive mistake. A lot of these draws/loses are totally undeserved.

I got so fed up I turned the game off. But then restarted it 15 mins later and beat Bury 8-0. Everyone's performance was amazing, all getting ratings around 8 out of 10. Morale was superb and we had Plymouth in the Johnson Paint Trophy Final and was quite confident after our last outing. We only lost 1-0, but it should have been more. My team just didn't turn up. Passing was shocking. Hardly created any chances, and had very little of the ball. A complete contrast to the Bury game. And that seems to be the overall problem. It's not even like we are good at home and bad away. It just doesn't make sense.

I'm just getting really fed up with the inconsistancy and wanted to get it off my chest.

change tactic, after a while the AI will adapt against you, but yes inconsistency is something major in this game

I've honestly tried that. I have 4-4-2, 4-4-2 diamond, 4-1-4-1, counter-attacking, control, attacking, defensive. A lot of the problem is not punishing teams. Most games I have more of the ball and more chances on goal, but we are not taking them even though I have 2 really good strikers. I was 2-0 up against 10 men and lost 3-2 against a team in the bottom half of the table. We were cruising for half the game. Then they got a goal back so I went more defensive. But it didn't matter what I did the other team banged in another 2 goals as if I was the team with 10 men. I was managing Spurs in a previous save and didn't really have this problem, or if I did I was able to sort it out after a game or 2. But this is game after game at the moment.

sounds like your defence, maybe put the defenders more defensively?

I have done. I was reading up on defending yesterday. I've always played with the Stopper/Cover defending, which worked pretty well when I with Spurs. I then found out I had been doing it wrong as I had my CBs set to man-marking, not zonal. So I've changed that with Rotherham and the defence does seem a bit more solid. But like I said a lot of the goals I'm conceding are long range efforts, or defensive mix ups. I bombard their goal for 75 mins and get 1, maybe 2 goals, they have a few chances and score 1 or 2. The only thing I can think at the moment is to try playing offside to prevent the opposition scoring long range efforts.

When your team is losing, have you tried motivating them? Or maybe it is your players? Your players might have a bad consistency stat (Invisible stat). Which players are normally doing bad when playing the match? Is it couple of certain players or is it the whole team? :/

You should always bear in mind about what the opposition teams does like if they do long balls maybe it is best for a deep defensive line to ensure they do no threat. And the pitch size as well.

I always play deep. I don't think it's any particular players. Some days they are good, some not. Both my top strikers went through a few bad patch, but then came the 8-0 win, and just before that one of them scored 4 in one game. I'd say on the whole though it's mainly my defence. There are the odd times when my strikers just can't score, but that happens. But my defence very rarely perform well. Even when they do (getting a rating of around 7 is considered quite good for these lot) they still let in at least one goal. And like I've said there are times when they play well but concede a last minute equaliser/winner from 30 yards which they can do nothing about.

I play with my defence push up for ultra attack while maintaining Def as they are fast pacy defenders who perform well :).

Just keep playing and maybe next season you can get a better defender for whatever position is the worst :)

Sometimes it's just the team, you encounter these problems less with higher rep team and better players. Lower league teams that quickly rise to success usually has over confidence problems especially if they're leading. I remember going nuts watching my defenders standing and doing nothing when I had a 2-0 lead.

I had another go last night and I was absolutely fuming. I played one of the bottom teams and it didn't matter what I did, we lost, or scrapped a draw. I rage quitted 4 times, finally getting a 2-2 draw. I decided I may as well experiment. The next game was against the bottom team and the same old story. I scored 2 own goals in 2 games. One shot hit the post, rebounded and hit the keepers head and bounced into the goal. It's a f**king joke! I know what's going to happen. I'm just outside the promotional places with 4 games to go (after being in the promotional places all season). It will come to the last game of the season with a win needed to get the last promotional place. All the games before that will be lost or drawn (depending on how many points I need to stay 1 or 2 points behind the last promotion place). The game is an absolute joke. I said exactly the same thing when I won the league with Spurs for the third time. Last game of the season I needed just a draw to win the league, but lost 2-0 against a team right down the bottom. Meanwhile the team needing a win to take the league title off me are winning, until the 85th minute, then **** team they would usually beat 5-0 get an equaliser and I win the league. That happened twice out of the 3 times I won the league. What's the point in playing if the computer is going to control results like that??? It's pathetic!

Psychology seems way more important than tactics with FM11. Its extra frustrating because its not like the game is very straightforward about what is wrong with your team.....there's pressure, there's complacency, there's confidence, all these factors you have to keep on an even keel, but the only feedback they give you is the general morale arrow and often that tells you things are fine when they're not.

And it seems to me that even when I do know what the problem is, and what a reasonable solution would be to that problem in the team talks and press conferences, it rarely works. Its fun to have to consider form and confidence, but I don't want the whole **** game based on that stuff.

Well i think FM 12 will be improved upon that maybe :) But SI tries to make FM 11 realistic as possible. making it difficult to play.

I thought I'd update you on how my season finished. Last night and the night before I could not get my team playing at all well, so rage quit. Today I gave it another go. I tried a few different things and won my 5 remaining games, moving from 8th to 3rd and gaining promotion to the NPower 1. The main things I changed was instead of having my fullbacks set to defend or support, I had them on automatic. When playing decent sides I played counter-attack, with my wide midfielders changed to wingers. I also stopped using the closing down, tight marking, easy/hard tackling options on the opposition individual players settings, and just had them set to play on their weaker foot. It's amazing what these few little changes made. Lets see how I get on in the NPower League 1 with my £5k promotion bonus!
