Getting Started.

Hi all.

Just got FM2011 last week as I've been off work.
Decided to play as Chelsea to get the hang of the game. But it was a complete fail. Lol.

My first season was terrible, ended up finishing 6th in the league, and only won the league cup! And I think my top scorer was Drogba with about 13 goals, which was pretty poor.

Then decided to try out at Q.P.R, didnt have any luck. I just cant get the hang of it! So ended up quitting.

Is there a thread/topic on how to get to grips with a team? Learn the basics? Get some knowledge of the tactics and how they are suited best to the players in your squad.

I want to be able to grips with all the features to help me succeed. I want to be able to join any team, sit and work out best players/tactics, and to take them upwards. As well as using the features like training, scouting etc..

I've looked through all the threads/topics and cant seem to find anything of this kind of help, so I apologise if I missed it.

Been advised to try my luck with Manchester city and try out all sorts of tactics in my pre season and then stick to the same tactics through out the season unless anything goes terribly wrong.

I bought the game on steam so don't have the manual to help me.

Apologies if this is too much to ask lol.

being new to FM in 2010 must be horrible... information overload x 100 or something.

the default tactics are usually ****-poor so I'd suggest trying one or two of the tactics available in the download section and perhaps trying to get hold of Tactical Theorems 11 (not sure if there is one, the last I used was 9 or 10? dunno I forget... ) which will help you to understand the tactics a bit more.

the default Training schedules in FM aren't great either but probably better now we have a few more other than just 'general' and 'goalkeepers' so, again, I'd suggest downloading some schedules from the download section too.

finally, search these forums for specific advice re: signings, wonderkids, tactics, man-management, etc.. the game is far too deep to give an authoritative guide in a forum post.

As Lazaru said, Read Tactical Theorems '10. It is for FM10 but it still applies.

I know what it is like coming into FM. I haven't been playing as long as some of the others here, only since FM07 - but when I did start FM07 I remember being overwhelmed... Just stick with it. You will get your head around everything eventually as you make mistakes and learn :)

Another point which may help. Set you assistant to handle training, and match preparation, as well as controlling reserve and u18 teams (already set by default) and the contracts of those players. You could also let your assistant handle your press conferences and purely concentrate on managing your first team squad.

As you get more confident/better at the game you will probably get frustrated at the poor decisions of your assistant, ie not renenwing a promising youngsters contract, handling a press conferecne poorly, training not up to scratch etc etc. You can then take on more repsonsibility and handle the club as a whole once your are ready to do so.
 
Well so far during the pre season i tried about 5 or 6 different tactics to work out what formation suits my team best. Had a good pre season beating every team except one. Including an 8-0 win.

Decided my best tactic was the one where i won 8-0.
It was a 4-2-3-1

So far season is goin badly lol.

Started off with a 1-0 away win at everton, then a late 3-1 win over blackburn.

Qualified for the europa league by beating a small team 4-0 at home, but losing 1-0 away.

Lost away to man utd 1-0, then drew 0-0 at home with villa.

then lost lost 5-2 away to werder bremen in the europa cup, lost 2-1 to blackpool away and then 2-0 to man utd in the league cup!

Obviously my tactics arnt working and now im stuck! lol.
I really am struggling with this game to say the least.
