Hi guys,
this time I bring you my emulation of Giampiero Gasperini's 3-4-2-1 tactic, one of the tactics he used this season. During UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE final match against Bayer Leverkusen he used this 3-4-2-1. He often alternated this tactic with a 3-4-1-2.
As always, when I test a new tactic, I do not make any player transfers, I block the first transfer session (Summer 2023) and reject all offers during the second (January 2024) so the players are the same at the beginning and at the end of the test. I played all matches by myself, won Serie A with the 2nd best attack (83 goals scored 2 goals less than Napoli, 85) and the best defense (only 30 goals allowed), and 93 points (29 win, 6 draw, 3 lost) in 38 games.
So, let's first analyze Gasperini's tactics and then how I emulated it in Football Manager 2024.

Giampiero Gasperini’s 3-4-2-1 Tactic and Its Emulation in Football Manager 2024
1. Background and AchievementsGian Piero Gasperini has transformed Atalanta from a mid-table team into a formidable force in Serie A and Europe. His tactics, especially the 3-4-2-1 formation, have been instrumental in this success. Known for his aggressive and tactical approach, Gasperini’s Atalanta won Serie A in the 2023-2024 season with a strong defensive record and an effective attack.2. Gasperini’s Tactical Principles
- Formation: Typically uses a 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 formation, with a focus on width and intense pressing.
- Defensive Setup: Employs a man-marking system with a high defensive line and physicality to disrupt opponents.
- In Possession: Builds play from the back, emphasizes width, and exploits flanks with quick counters and overlapping wing-backs.
- Wing Play: Key players push forward to create numerical advantages and deliver crosses, particularly from wide areas.
- Final Third: Utilizes speed and powerful shooting to capitalize on wide play, with players like Lookman and Koopmeiners being central to their attacking strategy.
- Out of Possession: High pressing and man-marking to win the ball back quickly and force opponents into mistakes.
- Formation: Set up a 3-4-2-1 formation with a Positive mentality to control possession and dictate play.
- In Possession:
- Attacking Width: Fairly Wide to stretch the opposition and provide space for wing-backs.
- Passing: Use Pass Into Space and Play Out of Defense to encourage vertical, controlled play.
- Overlaps & Focus: Set Overlap Left and Right to advance wing-backs and focus play down the flanks.
- Tempo & Passing Style: Higher Tempo and Slightly Shorter Passes for quick, controlled ball movement.
- Crossing: Low Crosses and Work Ball Into Box to ensure precise and effective attacking play.
- In Transition:
- Pressing & Counter-Attack: Use Counter-Press to regain possession quickly and Counter to exploit regained possession with fast attacks.
- Distribution: Roll It Out for goalkeepers to play from the back.
- Out of Possession:
- Defensive Line: Higher Defensive Line with High Pressing and Press More Often to maintain pressure.
- Offside Trap & Trapping: Use Step Up More for offside traps and Trap Outside to limit opponents’ space.
- Player Roles & Instructions:
- Goalkeeper: Sweeper Keeper (Defend) to act as an extra outfield player.
- Wide Center-Backs: Close Down More to apply pressure.
- Libero (Support): Dribble More to advance play from the back.
- Wing-Backs (Attack): Cross More Often, Stay Wider, and Close Down More to maintain width and deliver crosses.
- Volante (Support): Get Further Forward and Move Into Channels to support attacking plays.
- Defensive Midfielder (Defend): Drop deeper to shield the defense.
- Advanced Playmaker (Support): Roam From Position to find space.
- Attacking Midfielder (Attack): Roam From Position and Move Into Channels to break lines.
- Advanced Forward (Attack): Tackle Harder to lead pressing from the front.
