Hi all.
I’m a big fan of patient, aesthetic and possession football. This tactic aims to bring exactly that and it reflects the type of football I’d want my teams to play. You’ll need high quality players to be able to produce this style of game.
If you’re looking for a tactic designed purely for winning this isn’t the one. It’s for those wanting to watch good football and win in style playing in a particular way. It’s therefore designed for plug and play, but it’s very important to identify players that will fit the system and have the abilities to work it. The tactic uses positive mentality.
I have also used this tactic in the later part of my “Attempt to Change Scottish Football” story to good effect, but since needed to tweak to the latest patch 19.3.4.
==The Design==
To bring about this effect I wanted to pick a formation that has players positioned forming triangles across the pitch, enabling me to be able to play a short passing game where ball retention and recycling possession is of relative ease.
With dominating possession a prime objective, a top-heavy formation with a very high defensive line and line of engagement are used along with counter-pressing in an attempt to win the ball back as quickly as possible. The offside trap is also used.
Rather than pick the commonly used 4141 or a 442 diamond I wanted to use a formation that is a little old-skool but created with a modern and eccentric twist, my 3412 that looks to play the game in the opponents’ half.
==What you’ll need in general==
-Technically good players comfortable on the ball, can pass with good decision making and composure with the two creative playmakers having great vision
-Fast defenders with good anticipation given the very high defensive line played
-A Sweeper Keeper with the distribution, vision and decision making to counter effectively at the correct moments
-The defenders will also need good levels of concentration and teamwork given the offside trap is played and we’ll be having a lot of the ball
-Players with good work-rate and stamina to counter-press effectively and not tire out too easily
-Players that suit the roles in the system and have the necessary attributes
==Set Piece / Training Notes==
-Own design and no exploitation
-Ideally the AMC will be allocated as the designated corner and free kick taker
-The wingers are the throw-in takers
-I’m also playing on FM Touch, so the training selected is “Possession” based training
==Weaknesses==
-The long ball over the top with playing such a high line
-The flanks can be really exposed given the system has no-full backs. So you’ll need quality centre-backs to compensate
-If not performing well on the day, it can struggle against teams that will Gegenpress like Liverpool under Klopp

Since the patch I’ve had to tweak it within my Man City save, which is a bit more of a test than the poor standard of the Scottish game. Within the process I developed the squad required to play the system well and this led to winning the title whilst edging past Guardiola’s 100 points record haul with 101.
We also scored over 100 goals, though defensively we were only ranked second best in the league – but that is without fullbacks! Our one league defeat was away against Spurs, whom we dominated but they were just clinical with captain Kane at the forefront.

Serie A - Juventus / 95 points
Had one defeat all season against Roma. Drew a number of games ending up with 95 points, but with a better strike partner for Ronaldo we may have turned a few draws into wins.
This time round we also had the best attack and defence in the league. We also won the treble beating Inter in the Coppa Italia and a penalty shootout win against Chelsea in the ECL final that we had control of the game in.

La Liga - Athletico Madrid / 96 points
Despite having a small squad, the investment in a few cheap/loan players and having a preference for the league led us to defeats only away to Barcelona and Valencia who we were unlucky to lose against. It brought us home the La Liga Title.
We also beat Barcelona 6-0 in what’s probably my best score-line I've had with the tactic.
