Hey guys

I'm managing Liverpool in the 2015/16 season having just moved their and the board want me to play possession football and I thought that's what i should do, the currant expectations are to qualify for the Europa League. here is the 4-2-3-1 version of the possession tactic I am using. I Haven't really had much success in FM 14 with possession tactics so I just wanted to know If there is anything you would recommend changing.

The Pre season

the pre-season went ok. We at first played Colorado rapids and won 3-0 had 64% possession and 7 shots on target and scored 3 so that went well. the second game we played San Jose and won 2-1 having 59% possession and 9 shots on target compared to their 1, this game disappointed me as we didn't convert our shots into goals but the possession was working well so I put it down to just one of those games. However the second game was against Accrington Stanley this one really disappointed me we could only score 2 after 12 shots on target, and these shots were not mainly long shots they were in front of goal as I had the "work ball into box" shout on and then then to let as many as 4 shots on target in and for Accrington to score was anoying as well.
then this is what promoted me to ask for help we drew 1-1 away at Osasuna we lost the possession battle at 44-56% and drew 1-1 but again 9 shots on target but only scored one, I had a strong team out aswell, so before I play my first game of the season I just wanted some guidance on my tactic (Screenshots for the pre season games bellow)

I do think I have the players to do a possession tactic as all many of my players have High passing, Composure, Technique, Creativity and First Touch but it does not seem to be happening in game. is it the shouts that im using or is it the formation or the roles I Have my players playing in or something else?

Any help is much Appreciated :-)

Thanks mate appreciate it, will give it a go now. Will let you know how I get on :-)

First concern would be that the false 9 needs space to drop into. He'll be dropping right into where the trequartista is playing.

F9 and T are the same player essentially.

Try the following;
- AMC to a Shadow Striker with someone with good Finishing, like Suarez or Gerrard. Suarez will play more like a deep stiker, Gerrard will pop long shots and passes all day long. Use Coutinho as a Left IF

OR

- Drop the AMC to a DM as a anchor or half back (Matic maybe). Use the LCM as a DLP def/supp depending on player and the RCM as a CM-A.

The thing with the IF tactics is that the IF's and Attacking Mids are equally as important for scoring as your striker (sometimes more so). So you need high finishing on the flanks. I train Coutinho as an IF from day 1 so he's now got 15 in finishing. Him, along with Suarez, Rodrigez and Sterling as decent L-IFs. You can get Townsend for about $10m USD and he with Sturridge and Sterling/Moses give a good R-IF rotation.

Oh, and IF-S will provide passes, longsots and generally be a 'playmaker'. IF-A will attack the goal. You have 4 creators and no scorers. The F9, T and 2 IF-S's need to pass to someone to score.

I think you've got too many specialist roles in your team to be playing a Very Fluid style. (F9/Treq/2 CWB's) I'd have both full backs set to wing backs with one on support and one on attack so you're not leaving such a big gap for opposition to exploit. I'd make one of the IF's Attack (put the supporting WB on the same side as him).

I used the F9/Treq combo for PSV and it worked magic for me. I had Maher in the Treq role and Toivonen as F9 and they were banging goals in. This was before the first patch though.

I think getting your team to play possession football that still penetrates the opposition is the real trick in this game. I read this about Barcelona and it gave me a few ideas about how to get my team playing and still attacking. The Barcelona Style: My Interpretation

Several aspects you need to review with the roles and duties of your players. You have two CWB with an attack duty, CWB's are essential attacking players and this would leave your CDs exposed. I would rather have only attack duty and you should consider changing their roles to just one CWB. Then we have your midfielders, you don't use a position 6 player (DM, Regista, HB, Anchor) so your two midfielders need to be a block and a lot more positional players, I would use a CM (d) and a DLP (s). As for the more advanced players, one of the IFs should have an attack duty or even both of them if you to stick with the F9 role. Changing this one to a DLF, CF or AF can also be a good choice. Setting a F9 with a Treq is not logical, both players come deeper and since your IFs are set with a support duty, you don't have anyone near goal.

You should also widen your options and not restrict them focusing your passing through the middle and at the top of this you also instruct your players to play narrower.
