I currently play 4231 and have done for 5 seasons now with the same carefully moulded squad of amazing young players. Its great watching them develop, but now I have one or two incredible prospects who are nearly of age to play and they are Target Man and i've been playing with just poachers.

I have 4231 Attacking formation atm, but next season I'd like to phase in a new tactic which has the following if possible:

One lone striker whose Strength & aerial ability surpass his speed & finishing (TM, DLF, DF...)

No wingers or wide midfielders (wing backs are ok i can manage that)

Needs to use at least one AMC (any role except Inside Fwd)

Gets goals and makes the most out of the TM's physicality (goals don't have to come from Striker, my best players are AMCs.

Remember, I have no wingers in my squad

Lastly, I'm only looking for advie from your own experiences I'm not looking for an uploaded tactic as I need to base it around the specific squad i have.

Any & all help most appreciated :) :)

PS..
One more thing also... this'd be a tactic used in games where we're big favourites, so it needs to be attacking as I find countering gets me boredraws - they just don't come at me enough i guess - thanks again :)

Firstly. Playing an all narrow formation against teams that will st deep and compact is perhaps not the best way to stretch their defence. Using an Strong target man here as the main option in your attacking build up might also lead to that he will be heavilty marked and will struggle to find space. I am just worried that he will unable to find space.

With this said, I would use the best option, being a Narrow 4312 formation. This way, you will be able to push up the team and use more width. By letting one of your Forwards be the main outlet in the trasistion phase( The TM), you can now ensure that he will be able to find space out wide.

Why not start with using the following

Fluid-Attack
Press more
The rest of the settings on default

TM/Support
Poacher/Advanced FC
AMC - TQ or Attacking mid
Outer MCs, Box2Box
Central Mc - Deep playmaker/support or defend
Wingbacks/support or attack depending on opposition
Normal DCs

Hey TBH,

Apologies for hijacking this thread but can you give a similar recommendation like the one above for setting up a generic but effective wide 4-2-3-1?

Actually, I think that the Arsenal approach found in the first page is pretty good

If I had to choose just one approach of the Arsenal set to use as a plug and play, which one would you recommend? For a team like Arsenal or Chelsea

thanks better half, good idea!

I could swing this although i have a question or two..

I've not played with 2 B2B mids before - whats the reason for this and in your experience how does it work?

I've got no problem playing wide i just can't don't have players to play out wide. Can a wide tactic with a narrow formation be effective and how does this work?

thanks again i'll give it a try :)

PS. I can cater easily for those AMC roles - which is best would you say?

Well, using 2 Box2Box midfielders on the outside of a more creative players spreading balls from deep ensures you that your have 2 hardworking players that vcan be set to move into channel ( might give them free roles to) at be leathal in attacks as well as tracking back and defending.

The width is something that is used when in possession ( not without the ball). Basiclly, it determies how much of the width the team is to use. Here, the outer Mcs will play wider and the FCs will also spread wider.

As for the AMC, I would actually use the roels best suited for the player and/or depending on the opposition. If they play a really deep d-line and use a DMC, then perhaps its best to let him rund from deep often and move into channels out wide, dragging one of the DCs out of position and getting away from his DMC marker. If they play without a DMC, then I would use a TQ, playing in the hole

great stuff, thanks again :)

my creative players are mostly MC/AMCs but aren't very good at defending at all. That said i do have one or two DMC/MCs who are creative enough to be a DLP but nowhere near as creative as my AMCs. My team's average Decisions atrribute is the highest of all teams in the league by miles. This is mostly due to the quality of my playmakers, who can all play in CM position as well, so is there a way I could use your idea with an Adv Playmaker in MC instead of a Deep-Lying PLaymaker? I have the versatility to use box-to-box players either side or not, whichever is best, but I feel those AMCs are mostly key players who i need to play but they can't defend to save their lives lol.

:)

Sorry for asking, but can anyone show me were to get a 4-3-2-1 formation with 2 central offensive middfielders (like Gerrard and Lampard so on..) then 3 central middfielders behind them ??

Would you like me to make one for you ?

You could also try this one. Just one FC into AMC. Then make sure yuou use an advanced FC upfront and then give the roles to the SMCs that suits their profile

A TOP TEAM & MIDDLE TEAM TACTIC

Notice! The tactic is NOT uploaded. Instead, just follow the instructions as how to set it up. Any tweaks away from the pure TC-settings will be pointed out in the text and/or the screenie.

Disclaimer: This is in no way emulation.

Here, we will find not 2 or 3 but 4 approaches. When playing with a top notch team, the aim will always be to BE IN CONTROL OF THE GAME, no matter how the opponent chose to play .The key is to see if your players are finding space that they can exploit or of they have to create it them selves, if the players need to sit deeper and counter or if you have to push up and gain control by hassle the opponent. As you also see, this approach is not for top teams only, but also for middle teams.

Top teams vs. Middle tams – What approach are I most likely to use?

Well, if playing as Milan, you are more likely to face defensive teams and actually be able to stretch them ( as you are quality), hence using the first approach more often than lets say Genoa, that are morel likely to use the more balanced possession approach

Suited for: Almost all Italian Teams, teams that do have the quality to finish top 12(!), i.e. not being a real underdog
along with having many box2box midfielders, wingbacks/fullbacks and few wingers

1st strategy: Attacking Possession

Here, we play a balanced control based approach and let our fullbacks bomb the flanks and provide the width along with our attackers and box2box MCs that moves into channels players provide lots of width and we hassle the opponent and at the same time we try to keep possession when getting back the ball.

If playing against really deep sitting teams, It can be a good idea to actually shout “drop deeper” in a way to stretch the opponent even more and if this ultra defensive opponent is using a holding DMC that gets a lot of ball, us the AMC to specifically man mark him and close him down always in the OI´s.

2nd Strategy Direct Counter

Here, we play on the counter, getting the ball forward. We push up the team and play more direct balls into channels for our attackers and wingers to run onto. This is a way to exploit either the gap between the opponents attacking wingers and their deep sitting defenders and/or their attacking fullbacks, playing the ball over the top. If the opponent sits with the whole team behind the ball, this approach can be fruitless. Although it’s not dangerous playing this approach incorrectly .We will just not find the space to play the ball into but instead holding it deep.

3rd Strategy: A BALANCED APPROACH

If being uncertain how to start a match, this is ALWAYS a good option

Here, we try to sit with more men behind the ball, retaining possession and keeping the ball in the team. Obvious, we will still burst at goal and since we play with 5 attacking minded players (by roles and player types), this will happen often. The fullbacks will overlap with the box2box that here, playing one-two with each other and moves up with the rest of the team and keep the shape.. In short, we play a nice possession based approach in that sense that we keep possession in good positions and restrict the opponent to keeping possession far away from our goal.

4th Strategy: Cautious Counter

Here, we are playing much more cautious, perhaps an approach that will mainly be used away to really good teams or when wanting to grind out a result or hold on to a results. To cool things down a bit.

Sorry for late reply, even if you don't read this there isn't any harm in me posting it:

In a save I did where I ended up at Barcelona, I played a 4-1-2-1-2 formation with no wide players, so instead it was like this:

GK - Valdes/Adler
LFB/LWB - Abidal/Evra
CD - Pique
CD - Chiellini/T.Silva
RWB - Alves
DM (Anchor man) - Busquets
CM (DLP) - Xavi
CM (AP) - Iniesta/Wilshere
AM (Treq./AM) Messi/Sanchez/Pedro
TM - Llorente (Got La Liga Player of the year twice in a row!!)
P/CF - David Villa/Messi

I used a very fluid formation with a control strategy, and won the League once (runner-up once, losing out on Goal Difference), 2 Champions League Finals (Lost the first one to Arsenal from a Chiellini OG in extra time :'( !! ), The Spanish Cup twice, the Spanish Super Cup once, the European Super Cup once and the Club World Cup twice..... And that was all in 2 seasons!!! (I then quit to manage Holland!)
