I played normal 4-4-2 and promoted to Bundesliga then I switched to these tactics here Football Manager 12: is 4-4-2 still a winning tactic? | El Enganche which wasn't working so good. So I decided to tweak it into this:

Edit: after consulting the posting rules I'll rephrase.
With the current tactic I get the ball near their box but fail to score. I need a 4-4-2 with a midfielder that stays back and slows potential counter attacks / attacks and another who advances in the opposition area creating mayhem creating spaces / passes for wingers which cross / enter the box to score. I can't beat the top 8 teams, but lately I can't beat the smaller teams. I squander all my shots and chances to score and then at the back 1 out of 3 occasions my CD's fail to stop an attack.
