Hey, so this is my first FM so I thought I'd start with a team I know very well as I'm a big supporter of Chelsea and already know a lot of their young talent and staff. In the first season I must admit that I did restart some games and therefore I strolled to victory in the league and I think I also won the FA Cup. I also got to the final of the CL but lost on pens to RM :(

Second season I decided not to restart as otherwise it's no fun and I got knocked out of both domestic cups and lost the prem on the last day of the season (goal-less draw with Newcastle meant I lost by one point, I was heartbroken :L ). Had a fantastic run to get final of the CL against RM again but after going 2-0 up lost 2-3 to a last minute Carvalho goal from a corner :(

This season though I seem to be struggling for goals and the average ratings are around 7.0 which seems kind of low. So I was wandering what formation you think I should play and if you have any tips for a noob :P

Squad (Registered):

GK: Steffan Palermo, Delac, Cech
RB: Santon, Bosingwa, Ivanovic
CB: Terry, Kjaer, Bruma, Alex
LB: Bertrand, PvA, Cole, Zhirkov
CDM: Sahin, Mikel
CM: Essien, Lampard, Ramires, McEachran
CAM: Pastore, Ljajic
Wing: Young, Sanchez
ST: Aguero, Neymar, Drogba, Sturridge, Borini

I don't know how good these players are supposed to be on this game as this is the first time on a FM forum so do tell me if I've bought anyone terrible :) I've also bought quite a few youth players who I won't list here.

So if you could post a formation I should use and a starting XI I'd be very thankful, and any tips :)

il devasto with 10 noches on the defensive line for SURE!

Starting Line-up:

Cech
Ivanovic( or Santon)
Terry
Kjaer
Cole
Essien
Lampard
Pastore/Sanchez(as right winger)
Neymar/Young ( left winger or striker )
Aguero/Neymar
Sturridge/Aguero

What's 'il devasto' and '10 noches'? Sorry :L

And wouldn't Pastore be best in the middle of the park where he can use his creative talent? Thanks for the reply!

JP WOODYs HIGH SCORING TACTIC 11.3 - Downloads - FM-Base - Football Manager 2011 Tactics, Wonderkids, Updates & Cheats

My favorite tactic so far, I usually tweak it a little depending on the players I have but I love the basic set up.

Thanks but I don't really want to use someone else's tactic :) Just wanting guidance in terms of starting XI and formation and a few tactical tips :) Thanks though!

The il devasto is a tactic somone made, and by 10 noches he means increase the defensive line by 10.

For a formation I'd go for a 4-2-4, you have a solid enough team to be able to do it.

_______GK
RB__CB___CB__LB
_______CDM
_______CM
RW__________LW
_____ST__ST

Cech in goal.
Back four of Santon, Kjaer, Terry, LB is your choice I usually sign De Silverstri.
CDM Sahin
CM Lampard/Pastore
LW/RW would be Sanchez and young/neymar(I don't rate neymar as a ST)
ST, Aguero along with Drogba/sturrige you might wanna bring in a big target man though.

Cheers, sounds good to me. Might try Young and Neymar as the wingers as Sanchez hasn't impressed me so far. And I will look into De Silverstri as Cole is being a prima donna over me fining him but Bertrand and PvA have impressed me.

Ok,if you want to have your own formation,my advice is 4-2-4 with two CM one more creative and one more defensive or a quick 4-2-3-1.Also,look at the Laffles post "Recrating how Legends play",could give you some inspiration!

I have actually tried 424 and implemented it in a very similar way to the way you described but I didn't feel that I dominated possession in games because I was being over-run in the midfield.

Have you tried a 4-1-2-1-2? Your players seem to be fit for that formation, bar the wingers.

That's what I have been playing but goals are scarce.

---------------Cech
Santon---Kjaer---Terry---Bertrand
---------------Sahin
-------Essien--------Ramires
--------------Pastore
-------Neymar----Aguero

Bruma, PvA, Drogba impress.
Young, Lamps, Studge sometimes impress.

My advice would be to NOT download a tactic and use it as à plug & play. If being new to the game and using à downloaded tactic, you ont have à clue why you get or struggöe to get result. Are you scoring because the style of play suits your players, because the style of play is good for à top team, because the tactic exploits the matchengine against teams playing with à deep d-line om the break etc. When you are struggling, you wont know why either, lack of form, motivation, the players, the tactic etc. In short, you Will have no plan b as you wont learn what is working or not and why this is

My suggestion would be to use the Tc setting up à normal formation and normal game strategy, not too attacking and not tio defensive. Play a few mathes watching the flow of the game and read the matchtats. Use some shouts and ser what they do and look for patterns. This way, you Will learn what happends if your yteam sits deep against à top team pushing forward. You Will learn ro spot misstakes down to your team being lede with few passing options, being overconfident etc.

i would agree with betterhalf, and in addition to what he said i would suggest you to use a formation you see being employed on weekly basis in real life football

to give an example of this, i have a good understanding of narrow diamond tactics, 4-5-1/4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1, since i have been following Spanish and Italian football for years by now....but whenever i try to make a flat 4-4-2 i cant get it to work close to the same level on my own as the other mentioned formations, since i dont really know how its suposed to work

After tinkering with roles and player 'advanced' tactics I'm creating a lot more chances, especially for Aguero as I labelled him 'poacher'. However he rarely puts them away and so I can finish with 7 'clear-cut chances' but have only one goal from a corner and draw 1-1 with Marseille who have only had one shot on target all game, for example.

I dominate possession (~65% against nearly everyone), create chances (4+ clear chances a game) yet seldom score and the opposition seem to score every one of their chances (Cech's fault?).

After switching Aguero to the left and changing Neymar from Trequartista to Poacher the goals have been flying in! Won 6-1 against Bolton (they scored early from a corner and then 3 from Aguero, 2 from Neymar and a Pastore screamer in 25 mins made it 6-1 at HT - no goals in second half) and then 3-0 away to Fulham (Aguero hattrick) but it could so many more, 14 clear cut chances! But to be fair, 3 hit the post and two were cleared off the line. I'm sailing at the top of the Prem and this will be the year when RM are toppled as kings of Europe! :L
