Been trying now for 2 days one minute I think it right then I think its wrong

This is what I got from http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/03/20/teams-of-the-decade-3-manchester-united-2006-09/

"The side they won the Champions League with in 2007/08 seems the best XI to describe in detail, however. Always featuring a back four with two relatively deep central midfield* players, Ferguson generally used an additional midfield player, with a fluid front three of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez.

The reasons Ferguson could afford such a loose shape in the final third were that (a) Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez were all highly versatile, happy to play either on the wing or through the middle, (b) The three had a wonderful understanding in and around the penalty area, meaning Ferguson could effectively hand out three ‘free roles’ and sit back and witness the results and, crucially (c) All three understood their defensive responsibilities.

Of course, the key feature of the side was, in a move often described as being influenced by Luciano Spalletti’s Roma side, United featured no permanent frontman. Ronaldo was primarily a winger, who developed his game both technically and physically to become both a goal threat from the wing, as well as a powerful presence upfront when needed – whilst Rooney and Tevez were small, creative forwards who liked dropping deep and were both extremely hard-working.

The fluid front three were not always all used, however. In away European games that season, one of them (Tevez) would sometimes be sacrificed for a hard-working midfield player, such as Park Ji-Sung. United’s win that season away at Roma will go down as one of the great away performances in Europe by an English club. Rooney played wide on the left in a fairly flattish midfield five, whilst Ronaldo was given the lone striker role.** Whereas Francesco Totti invented the ‘false nine’ role by dropping deep into central midfield areas, Ronaldo played it by both dropping deep and drifting into the wide areas, creating a dilemma for the now-redundant Roma centre-backs.*** When he dropped deep, one of Park or Rooney would become the highest player up the pitch. United won 0-2, with the first goal a brilliant, towering, ‘classic centre-forward’ header from Ronaldo."

What I think reading from the above:
* "Two relatively deep central midfield" In the picture above Carrick and Scholes both in DMC in a formation described as a 4-5-1 (ZonalMarking say this about there diagrams "They show the players in their ‘actual’ positions on the pitch, generally in the defensive phase of play. Any significant changes when in possession are depicted by movement arrows".)

** "Rooney played wide on the left in a fairly flattish midfield five, whilst Ronaldo was given the lone striker role." This reads to me that the midfield is a flat 5

*** "Ronaldo played it by both dropping deep and drifting into the wide areas, creating a dilemma for the now-redundant Roma centre-backs." I would say this Describes Ronaldo's role as a complete fwd in attack possibly?

Formation in FM
Looking at the picture I would of thought 4-5-1 with two DM's and one CM but reading the section about the game against Roma I'm think 4-5-1 with flat midfield or is it a 4-2-3-1 I keep hearing that Fergie has used this formation so it could be.

This is were I struggle determining the Team Instructions

Team Instructions (what I think anyway)
Control
Rigid
More Expressive
Default
Press More
Default
Default
Default
More Roaming

High normal Def line
Low wide width
Mid tempo

Counter attacking ticked

What do people think any suggestions would be helpful

Anyone willing to help

I would almost try it with out a real striker up front, kind of like the Roma 4-6-0. Put Ronaldo as the AMC and play him as a central winger (as explained in this article: http://www.fm-base.co.uk/forum/f103/an-amateur-tacticians-chalkboard-for-fm11-t57796/post1001269.html). Rooney and Tevez (or Park) would act as your wingers, obviously, and Anderson as a central midfielder. I would then put Carrick and School as DMs, with Carrick as and Anchorman and Scholes and Deeplying Playmaker.

That's just my suggestion. Another option would be put Ronaldo as a striker and implement that "False 9" to get him dropping deep.

My wingers in the AMRL positions ? Might give both suggestion a shot

I think the formation is a 4-2-3-1, with CM's instead of DM's (although that doesn't matter that much). Carrick would probably be a CM - defend and Scholes a DLP - support. Anderson would be an AMC - support. Wayne Rooney and Ji Sung Park would probably be defensive wingers - attack, while Ronaldo would be a trequartista - attack. Wayne Rooney and Ronaldo would have "swap position" enabled.

He called the midfield "flattish" which to me means no more difference than 2 strata in the TC. The AMC - support and defensive wingers are all defensive enough to make the midfield pretty flat, depending on how the opponents move.

"deep central midfielders" can mean two things. Either deep in the sense of being right in front of the back line, or deep in the sense of staying deep when the rest of the team attacks. I think he means the second one. Anyways, the roles of deep lying playmaker and CM - defend should fit the requirements.

The striker dropping deep and wide can only be a trequartista. The trequartista and deep lying striker are the only two roles dropping deep very often, and to also drop wide means lots of roaming and creative freedom. The trequartista fits that perfectly.

It's really difficult to find players for this tactic, because you need two players who are not only comfortable both on wing and at striker position, but also comfortable putting in a defensive shift and being a creative outlet for the team. If the trequartista and left winger wouldn't be able to swap position, the tactic would lose most of its effectiveness.

^^ Cheers for that

Should the wingers be in support to help out more defensively
