would like to know if anyone could help with my spurs save. currently 16th after 12 games and i don't understand why. thanks

You have 2 defenders... :@

In your 1st tactic, you are going to ripped apart because you only got 2 defenders and only 1 CM trying to defend. Who are protecting the flanks when your wingbacks go forward? Your RPMs are going to bomb forward too. In your defending phase, everyone with the exception of your 2 centrebacks and 1 CM will be high up. If your attack breaks down, a direct ball or long ball down the flanks and the opposition will be through on goal. And why the need for your wingbacks to be positioned higher than default? Your formation looks more like a 2-5-3 in defence or and a 2-1-7 in attack.

Having more players going forward doesn't guarantee more goals.

In the 2nd tactic, you choose a defensive strategy but also chose TIs like higher tempo and more closing down. If you are really going to use a defensive strategy, you should be trying to keep your team shape, slow things down to disrupt your opposition rhythm and sneak a point if not a win.

Others have talked about your defensive problems so I'm not going to bother -- especially since you have some solid fullbacks at your disposal. During the attacking phase, you can still get your width by using FB(S) and then IF(A) for Lamela on the right and W(A) for Chadli on the left or IF(S) for Eriksen.

I recommend playing a 4-1-2-3:

Lloris as GK(D)
Rose as FB (S) Vertonghen as CD(D) Alderweireld as CD(D) Walker as FB (S)
Davies as CDM(D)
Alli as RPM(S) and Dembele as BBM(S)
Eriken as APM(S) and Lamela as IF(A)
Kane as CF(A)

You'll want to retain possession, higher defensive line and press the opponents. Try to turn the ball over high up the field and take advantage by counter-attacking quickly.

Thanks for the replies. I really like the starting tactic so will persevere and take your advice on board. Shall i drop my wing backs back to a lb and rb on support, would that rectify some defensive problems? Also do you think i should be playing my attackers in different positions? E.g kane as the poacher? Im going to start Heung son min up front instead of Bony who was a waste of money and hopefully get Volland in Jan who can play up top and rm when i want to defend.

You have to have plan what you trying to do, shape itself is not as big problem as it may look. But you have to have plan. I used 2 defenders and 1 HB only as defensive players, but I was heavily marking and pressing opponent and it worked. I placed my players close to his players and marked them to deny them space, so my back two were enough as I was dominating possession and playing mostly on opponents half. This had its own risks, and I understood them, but this is something that you need to understand too.

When you are playing with only two CB-s and only two wide players, you can not give them permission to dribble, as there is no one who can cover them without leaving you wide open, and you did exactly that by giving them attack mentality. You want them to use space without ball, not to dribble at defenses, loose ball and live you open. Second issue is that with your extreme offensive mentality and three strikers, you have very few players that are defending even when your defense is set. You may want to use at least two of them to mark opposition players, in order to help out while defending, as your front three will be bypassed very quickly. And third issue is that you leave a lot of space between defense and midfield trio, which can be exploited, and you have to recognize when this is happening and react by moving one of your 3 MC-s to DMC position. Finally, you have to be very careful with your WB-s so they would not leave their position and leave holes due to much more pressing shout. You have to keep them in place as they are only ones who are defending wide and they have to play much safer game. And finally, try to play little slower, control game more, to be more in control of what is going on, and not loosing too much balls due to extreme tempo of yours.

Your second formation is bit like this one,
Lobanovskyi's Mythical Tactics for FM14
But you notice the difference, and notice what this gay wanted to achieve with each shout, and see how it is different from your approach, you may see why.
I am guessing you were trying to do something like this:
Emulating Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid
I have not tested it, so it may work, but I see some issues similar to your approach.
To understand better what is all about in this formation and this approach, read this, you may get some ideas:
A Guide to Atletico Madrid's Tactics Under Diego Simeone
Your issue is that due to flexible shape, your defensive shape is crashing down, and you leave space with this aggressive closing down, and second issue is that your players are too far apart to be effective when pressing. You need to think about these issues and to understand how you can get better results.
I had used similar formation and similar view with success, but it was more of attacking/control mentality, and it was very fluid. Reason for this is that you want to bi extremely aggressive when in transition, and the way to achieve this is give everybody permission to join counters when opportunity arises. Second, you want your team to cover each other and do not leave holes in your defensive shape while closing down. And finally, You have to play a bit with your width, sometimes, it could be useful to play bit wider, sometimes it is good to play narrow. Just watch game and see which are the problematic areas, and how you can plug them by using your width.
One more thing, with this mentality, you may want to use defensive forwards, as they are quite useful while defending, and they are great at giving you time to push up the field in counter attack.

thank you for taking the time to reply. Ive started to have a bit more joy no - gone up to 7th and finished top of my euro group. I noticed there was a big gap between attack and midfield so have slightly altered the tactic to play 1 am and two strikers as opposed to three. I've also converted my wing backs to rb and lb to give more defensive security, and altered instructions. How do you think this looks? Should i still be using two roaming playmakers in mf or should i change one? Thanks

Most of people does not like using more then one playmakers, but I do, if I have players that can pull it off. It gives you more options and more creativity. It does create some other issues, but if you place them right, they can be quite effective....

So no, I would not say that two RPM-s are wrong thing to do. Furthermore, placing your focus on attacking on side and having each of them out on wide position is great as they will drift on side and use space that will be there due lack of wingers in your formation, they will be supported with FB-s (this is one issue I would like to go over latter), and on left side you will have also your striker helping out. It would be nice to see if you could replicate similar movement down the right side, not quite the same, but similar, and then use your extra man in central area to create something with his movement and/or passing. In other words, I would think a little about roles you give to your AMC and STRC and how you could use them even better, or at least, give them some movement with IO.

Regarding your FB-s, this is just me, but I do not like my fullbacks to have freedom of deciding weather is good thing to do to dribble or not, as they supposed to be supporting cast, not main stars, and besides, they are creating some defensive issues if they do. Other then this, you have no wide support, so you should think about WB-s rather then FB-s, as they are staying wide by default and they are little more advanced positioned so they have to cover less space. And further more, you already have RPM-s and even striker which can provide linkup, so they do not need to run with the ball, but they can just use space that other players WILL create.

And finally, do you really need that much TI-s? For example - I do not see point on giving permission to all your players to shoot on sight. Or to be more expressive, while they alredy have quite a freedom in your mentality and with roles you selected, I do not see need for you to give them even more free pass. I also do not see point in looking for overlap shout, as you further slowing down already slow pace rhythm of game, when your players will already look for your FB because of your use left and right side shout.
