OK, I support Wigan so naturally, I want to do well with them on FM, BUT! I can't seem to survive one friggin' season in the PL.. I've tried every possible formation, tactic, preperation, signing, etc.

what am I doing wrong? All the players are playing in their preferred position, which I should know because I love the team. Funny thing is though, I do surprisingly well in the cup competitions, not yet won one, lost to Brighton in the Semi final of the league cup last time around.

Anything I may be missing out? Again, I set up the squad thoroughly, use the advanced team and player tactics, I do match preparation, use friendlies to find the best formation/line-up, praise individuals for excellent performances (not too often though so I don't **** the others off)..

Pick a good tactic and watch out for player's motivation. You must motivate them properly on and off the pitch. Also keep an eye on match preparation and training schedules.

Am I right in thinking that the formation/tactic depends on how the opposition lines up? Also, I have some great Youth players from all over Europe that have joined me on season long loan but the team blend preparation just doesn't seem to make any difference at all.

Maybe it's the tactic that you're using or maybe the harmony is disrupted. What tactic do you use ?

P.S I think that if you have a good tactic, you should do well in front of any opposition tactic.

I use 4-2-3-1,

Boselli an Advanced forward - target man.
Rodallega - Attacking Winger, McCarthy - advanced playmaker - support, N'zogbia - Attacking Winger
Diame + Thomas - Defensive midfielders, one supporting and one defending.
Figueroa - Attacking fullback, Gary Caldwell + Alcaraz - Defenders - stopper and cover, respectively and Ronnie Stam as an attacking fullback.

Defensive line - very deep
Tempo - slow
passing - short
Counter attacks.

I often switch all my defensive line to full on defending against the bigger teams and possibly add a 5th but that doesn't even work, I concede more when I'm playing a defensive game than I do from attacking which is confusing.

I struggled for a bout 3 seasons trying to find a tactic that works consistently, then it all clicked. You've got the first bit right in making a formation that suits your players. You need to go into detail on all the advanced player instructions and set them according to your player abilities. eg. if they have good creativity, set creative freedom fairly high etc...For a team like Wigan, when you go to team instructions, set philosophy to rigid/very rigid. I hope you won't take offence in me saying they are not one of the best teams in the PL, so you wanna concentrate on keeping the team's shape and being tight at the back. Then make sure you use the correct starting strategy for each individual game:

Home - weaker opponent: Attacking/Control
Home - Similar: Standard
Home - Stronger: Counter/defensive
Away - Weaker opponent: Standard
Away - Similar: Standard/counter
Away - Stronger: Defensive

It's more detailed than that but you get the picture

The best thing if you wanna create a good tactic is to download the tactical theorems, you can get it from this site, which is worth a read as it explains how tactics work in the game.

If you have wingers in your team (AML, AMR) use my tactic, just lower the defensive line and slow the tempo just a bit. See how that works for you. I see that you have all the required players for my tactic, but not so sure about the wingers, that's why I'm asking.

Thanks a lot :) I do use rigid and keep roaming to a minimum, my creative freedom is normally on a minimum. I've not looked at downloading tactics yet so I will have a look at them. Going to start again tonight because after being relegated from the PL with Wigan doesn't do too much for my reputation lol but I suppose it could be worse.

I've just had a look at your tactic, seems pretty good, I'll have to use it when I finish work tonight and tell you how it has worked for me :D I'll need to buy some fast CB's though if I'm going to be doing it with Wigan lol, Caldwell and Alcaraz are sloths.

My tactic has the focus point on the Ball Winning Miedfielder and Box to Box Miedfielder. If these 2 players do well, you must win. In my tactic, if you lower the defensive line, you don't longer need so fast CB's. I created this tactic for good teams. I wanted a tactic that can guarantee succes for big clubs, although it's not only the tactic that is important. I am thinking about making a flying tactic for small clubs and might be doing that by the end of the week .
