First season as Newcastle i wanted formation which could take advantage of the excellent midfield options whilst allowing me to to use the pace of Remy,Ben Arfa , Gouffran and Cisse.

Set up in a 4-3-2-1 Narrow -
(Can't do a print screen)

(Cisse)
(p)
Ben Arfa Felipe Guitterz
(AP)Att (AM)Att
Tiote Cabaye Sissoko
(BWM)s(DLP)d (BBM)s
Santon Taylor Mbwia Debucy
(FB)Aut (LD)ST (CD)C (FB)Aut
Krul
(GK)D

Fluid
Counter

Instructions :
More direct passing
Pass into space
Drill Crosses
Run at defence
Look for overlap
Play Narrower
Push higher up
Hassle Opponents
Higher Tempo
Be more disciplined

Signed Felipe guitterz to play in attacking mid due to his ability and high work rate.

Due to the teams high work rate (Bigger games i played Gouffran ahead of ben arfa as he works harder) and tackling ability with Cabaye,Sissoko and Tiote i planned to press high up the pitch and win the ball early. Then break quickly using the pace and dribbling ability of the 2 attacking mid's and the energy of Sissoko.

First season excellent - Won the premier league with the best defensive record. Beating Man City, Man Utd etc

Second season signed :
Roman Eremenko and Gary Cahill to bolster midfield and the defence.

Then it stopped working. Defence wasn't as strong and couldn't create as many chances.

I thought teams may have figured the tactic out but in Classic mode you can only set one formation rather than three.

I don't want to change to "attacking" or " control" as i want to press high and play on the counter.

Has anyone has a similar problem trying to play a similar way ?

Does the countering only work if players can drop back and then break rather than press high ?

Sorry i couldn't give a screen print but i don't know how to do it !

Thanks.

You could press Alt+Enter to put game in Window mode and then use Print Screen ot use F12, then collect screenshots from steam.

On tactic, I do think that tactics seem to become ineffective with time, I'd recommend watching the games and figuring out what's wrong. Or sometimes it's just Match Engine that hates you. xD And Counter doesn't necessarily have to have a deep defense, you could press high up, win the ball and hit the team on break, although deep defense insures better solidity at the back. Do you use any player instructions (I prefer to)?

The only instructions are the that the two centre backs play it short and that Cabaye,Ben Arfa etc (Those with high passing etc) try more risky passes. I never have much possession which is fine but i was shocked at how well the tactic worked first season and how poor it was in the second (with added better players)

counter attacking and pressing high up dont go well together...you cant effectively counter if you win the ball high up when all of their players are in their third...I mean, you can try, but you wont win games...

This is what I would use:

drop deeper or much deeper
stick to positions
more disciplined
lower or much lower tempo
play narrower

plus

pump ball into box or clear ball to flanks

Yeah i know it would work better dropping off but given the high work rate of the team it seems a waste and very reactive to drop off.

A lot of teams now press the ball high up and counter. Dortmund being the best example.

Can a high line /press and counter tactic work does anyone know ?

It worked in my first season winning the league but then the second season hit.....

Defense was always going to be a problem, mate. When playing a high line, I would have the same roles for both the defenders. Co-ordination is very important during high line and they need to be fast. I suppose you are using Cahill as one of the defenders. He is neither fast nor a team player. I love your approach btw. I play possession football and this is something different.

I don't think Dortmund's style of football is counter in fm terms, I would say it is attacking with much higher tempo which leads to quick counter attacks also.

correct...they are prolly going route one with high tempo and attack strategy

Lower tempo in counter attacking? WUT? No offense but that's absurd. I don't use any defensive line instruction while counter tbh.

Go route one is for overload mode, when team needs a goal desperately, I'll say more direct passing. Go route one is Attack attack attack.

You dont always counter, you need low tempo to keep the ball when youre not countering

Wrong again, go route one just means get the ball to attacking third asap...which is what you need if you dont want to waste your counter by opponents taking their defensive positions...

also, use alt+f9 this will save a screenshot and it will be in the sports interactive folder under screenshots I think.

listen if 1st season is good and 2nd season is bad with same formation do like this in training

View attachment 441726

in 2-5 games you will see your formation is good as 1st season (if its same formation like 1st season)

this happends because you have new players in team and they are not gel in it yet...or because they moral is not so good

try it and you will see improvment very soon

I only added 2 players to the squad second season so cohesion shouldn't be the problem.

My guess would be the settings in FM 2014 don't allow you to directly match the high pressing/counter football dortmund play.

They press high up the pitch and try to use pace and vertical passing , when they cannot press the ball they drop back into a narrow formation and play on the counter.

Its hard to find a combination on FM like this. I changed to high pressing and an attacking style and im scoring more but still conceding. Shame that the strategy i wanted to use can't be replicated in the game

Counter
Hassle Opponents
Stay on feet
Higher Tempo
Play out of Defence
Push Much Higher

Try switching team mentality to attack. Put midfielders and one of the strikers on support. High line, hassle opponents, lower tempo.
