Failing to muster a decent run of form as title rivals pull out in front and a Champions League place up for grabs meant the Europa League had a sudden importance for Jose Mourinho. Although a Uefa cup winner with Porto, the competition became devalued due to the expansion of the Champions League in the 21st century, but with Champions League qualification looking an increasingly hard slog domestically, the winner’s bonus looks a decent out: “My opinion changes because the rules change and because the Europa League winner has a direct spot in the Champions League.
