Me and a friend have a bit of an obsession with Mario Balotelli. Any half-story about his off-field exploits is reported to the other immediately. How can you not love a man who attempted to solve a bullying issue between some Manchester schoolboys, gave £1000 to a homeless man and whose entourage includes Chris Samba? You can easily imagine a worn-out Roberto Mancini traipsing from the scene of Balotelli’s latest caper to the next, shaking his fists at the sky, shouting “Mariooooooooooo!” But it’s not as if this is particularly unique is it? Every football fan has at least one mental player among their favourites. It’s the fatal flaw: it makes them seem more human, easily identifiable at a time where they appear most distant from the common man. Balotelli’s often been portrayed as immature, but that’s not how I see him. I don’t believe he is ever likely to change into a more conventional person. He acts like a man who is endlessly unimpressed by everything around him – this is, after all, someone who refuses to celebrate goals unless they are against a big team.
