Holding Midfield: Premier League 2010/11 awards

The Full article :)

Player of the Season
Looking through the candidates, there’s no one obvious player who deserves this accolade. Carlos Tevez has been sensational for the majority of the season, but we’ve plumped for Nemanja Vidic. It’s often difficult for defenders to win awards, as their work is mostly shared between the organisation of a team and is less spectacular than an attacker’s, but the new Manchester United captain’s sheer dominance would impress even the most casual of observers. The fact he also should have won significant recognition for his performances in 2008/09 plus his team’s league success this season gives him the edge over his former teammate.

Young Player of the Season
As the only decent contender, it’s a shame Martin Kelly’s appearances were limited this season – he still wouldn’t have come that close to Javier Hernandez though. Chicharito’s taken Michael Owen’s spot in the United squad as the man with the “big goals”, while showing versatility on top of a poacher’s instinct.

Goal of the Season
Marco van Basten versus Stoke. No? We mean Gareth Bale‘s volley then.

Manager of the Season
As one of those who found it difficult to see where Blackpool would be getting any points this season, we must give Ian Holloway a lot of credit for his work, but it’s difficult to justify saying a manager whose team was ultimately relegated was the best of the year. Likewise with Kenny Dalglish, having been in charge at Liverpool for just half of the season. Sir Alex Ferguson is the next logical choice, yet United have been rather disappointing champions. Our choice was split between FA Cup finalists Tony Pulis of Stoke and Roberto Mancini of Man City, who have both noticeably improved their sides. Mancini, having beaten Pulis in the cup final, also wins this encounter – despite his considerable resources leaving many expecting more, the Italian’s work in making City look a dominant side is impressive.

Disappointment of the Season
It’s hard to look past Fernando Torres for this dubious honour. Despite his injury problems the year before, he had still been superb when he played, yet this season he’s looked nowhere near world class. He’s suffered from tactical choices – Liverpool’s lack of pressing and rigid structure, and the insistence on a striking partner at Chelsea – but that doesn’t excuse his lack of effort on Merseyside, or his seeming loss of his ability at Chelsea.

Honourable mentions: Branislav Ivanovic, Luka Modric, Stuart Holden, Yaya Toure, Jack Wilshere, David Silva

I don't know how anyone could suggest Rooney's goal vs City wasn't the goal of the season.

If Rooney's goal was lucky then Berbatov's goal should have won goal of the season. I'm not complaining though as it hardly matters. Its just someone's opinion..

Bale's goal was easily better than both Rooney and Berbatov goals. The technique to pull something like that off is incredible. If Ronaldo, Messi or even Zidane had scored that, everyone would be jizzing in their pants over it. Can't really argue with anything here, except that Lucas is the wrong choice for me. Wilshere has been really impressive, as too have Yaya and Modric. Well done to Lucas though, he deserves a lot of credit for his performances this season.

Could argue that about bale's goal?

You could but I wasn't debating about Bale's goal.

No, it wasn't.

Oh ok, I’m convinced. Try backing up your argument in future please.

It was flooky, sure he was trying to do it but he had no intention of it hitting his shin. It has nothing on Di Canio’s goal against Wimbledon or Trev Sinclair back in the mid 90’s.

During the ManUtd awards program, Rooney said he didn't connect it with his shin, it was with his foot and one photo clearly showed that.

All overhead kicks have luck involved in it. No 2 ways about it.

Looks like more of a shin than anything to me, which makes ita lot more of a fluke. Added to the fact that he has never scored one like it before and you have to say there is a lot of luck involved.

I used to be very good at bicycle kicks though, and I think there is a skill to them, it's definitely not luck and I don't think you need luck to pull one off, just the perffect cross to attack. I used to find volleys like Bale's much more difficult.

Trevor Sinclair's was the best for me, but players like Van Basten and Vialli used to do them frequently, you can't say they were lucky that many times, and they always used to go where they were aiming.

Ronaldinho's against Villareal was unbelievable, and Sinclair's was special too. Rooney's did hit his shin, a great goal but it was pretty lucky.

Di Canio's and Sinclair's goal would be relevant if they had happened this season :S.

From the pictures I've seen, it came off his foot. Even if it did come off his shin, it doesn't stop it being a great goal or the goal of the season...
