hi guys,

First of all I want to tell you that I read TTF09 for a couple of times and studied very well.

My problem is no matter which tactic and mentality I use, it doesnt work well!!! I played with good teams and with average teams, it doesnt matter, same result.

My big question is: Must I use a direct passing style if I am playing a attacking mentality?

The TTF09 tells that the attacking player should have a direct passing and support more mixed and the defensive one more short.

I set 5 of my players a direct passing style, 2 mixed as supporters and 3 a short passing style for defenders.

But so I can't build up, I havent much ball possession and I havent many chances on target, I have a lot of chances, but not on target, so its difficult to score enough.

Can somebody explain me how should I set the passing options for the several players in a tactic?

thank you very much

TT&F is meant as a guide not as a rulebook :)

The thing to remember is that the worse your players are, the less likely they are to be able to play a very short passing game. So if the TT&F says 'short passing' then for a Premier League team that might mean something in the middle of the 'short' passing range, whereas for a Blue Square South team it will mean something closer to mixed passing.

You don't have to use direct passing when attacking. Although the thing to remember is that when attacking you need to pull the defence out of shape and the easiest way to do this is quick balls which cut defenders out. That means direct passing as short passing will not be fast enough when your players try to find a way through.

But passing styles also depend on formation - you need to allow your players sufficient freedom to find someone to pass too. There's not much point playing direct balls down the wings if your wingers are too far back and you only have one striker up front. Not much point asking someone to play short passing if there's no-one close by to pass to either.

For some good examples of passing patterns which work, have a look for my Benitez 442 set of tactics which were designed for an English League 2 team, Lee's Winning Liverpool tactics which were designed for Liverpool, and JP Woody's set of tactics (sorry can't recall their name now nor which level of football they were designed for).

Hope that helps.
