I was wondering how Australian soccer teams get promoted to the A league?. I'm pretty sure I know how it works in england basically if your side is the best you get promoted to a better devision but Is that the case in Australia. another thing Is a "Grand final" different to a "League cup final" & why does england have leagues that teams can get relegated & promoted to yet Australia & others dont (??costs to much??). I hate AFL but they should implement the same system as england which in turn would make the teams work a little harder to stay in the top devision & increase the quality of the players.

The FFA cant even cover the costs for the crappy teams in the A-League now and there is not really much point in teams fighting hard for the league if your best players are going to leave for Europe the next season anyway.

It's probably a money situation because of football not being one of the main sports in Australia (aussie rules is likely the main sport) so they can't generate enough money, thats my guess anyway.

Well, there is no promotion, pretty much a city bids for a spot for a team.

And whom ever is deamed the best choice is chosen.

thanks guys :)
'GOD **** AUSSIE RULES is sadley by far the most popular sport in aus :/ followed closley by rugby. over here apparantly (i've played both rugby, aussier rules) if your a big buff hard **** your pro at both above sports.

They can't be promoted, because the system just works differently (much like the U.S)- Australians have no idea what promotion is

well we have 1 melbourne soccer team & just recently another melbourne team joined the A league "Melbourne heart" & "Melbourne FC" it seems like solopop is right " pretty much a city bids for a spot for a team.

And whom ever is deamed the best choice is chosen.". on another note I cant remember there name but a team has recently died out of the A league as far as I know there board of directors where very poor at there job (They where rugby pro's) & other issue's.
but hey the A league has only existed for a few years so Camb0dia your probably right

i used to live in melbourne, and the AFL system is shocking, one season Melbourne victory would win the league and then you'd think to yourself they might not even be in the league next season lol, football is like the 6th sport out there after aussie rules, rugby, cricket, swimming and cycling! its shocking lol im glad i live back in sunny wales! haha

I live in Sydney, we used to have the NSL but we had an inquiry a few years back and got the A league. But the thing about promotion is that clubs in Australia have two distinct types; professional clubs and semi/amateur clubs. There is little or none cross over, often new clubs are created to be added in the professional league and they either affiliate with an amateur club for reserves or create a new one (this is in other sports not a-league), making it difficult for old clubs to become professional

Donnelly you are so right man I support Perth glory but as the years go by I'm getting the feeling they are not cutting it as a professional team (A lot of changes need to be made for the club to really make any impact) & will soon be removed from the A league :(. so true Cam thats something the AFL should really look into is cross over. they have loads of state teams so why not give them a chance to challenge for a spot in the AFL I know they would more then likely get hammered but really if the system doesn't give clubs an opportunity to play with the best fans & professionals will never really know what the so called Amateurs are capable of.

Another reason I haven't seen anyone mention (apologies if I missed it, but scim reading) is the sheer size of the place. If we had a second tier it would be difficult for a club to travel from Perth to say Sydney on a lower budget (it's tough enough as it is!). And if you kept it state based then there's the question of who goes up or down (playoff between all the state league winners?)
Anyway, all will be fixed when I become PM and make all the other football codes illegal :)

lmao excellent gecko81 once you become PM make sure you destroy the AFL/NFL while crucifying anyone who supports it & put all that money into the A league (Now that should help with promotion;)). Make it law that every individual in the country must support a soccer team also you should remove the "carbon tax" ;) aswell
