how important are tactics?

as the tittle says how important is it to have a set tactic
i find that a can start a game just put players into positions and do better than when i make a tactic is this down to me or are tactics that important?

I would say they are because it determines how your team play and what your style is.

I have tried doing what you are saying, but often it hasn't worked.
