Hi was wondering how many staff memebers I should employ, like what should the standard amount be, and is it better for me to take the training or leave to my assistant?

There's no universal answer to that, as it varies a lot from club to club, and what league you're in. In the board room overview you can see how many you're allowed/recommended. Just make sure you have enough coaches to offer your players good coaching in all categories.

It's entirely up to you if you want to take charge of the training. Personally I take charge of the training of every senior player and every prospect in the club, and leave the deadbeats to the assistant.

If my board allows, I try to aim for:

- Assman, Director of football & Head of youth development
- 2 GK coaches
- 2 Fitness coaches
- Head physio, U19 (or equivalent) physio, and 2 general physios
- 5 general coaches, one for each category
- Chief scout (set to next opposition), plus as many scouts as I need

I take control of both team and individual senior training. Youth training is left to the HoYD. I don't bother with U19/18 managers as the HoYD can manage the youth team. Same for reserve managers - my assman can take that job.

Do the u19 coaches still affect your youth income or is it only rep and scouts now?

Youth intake is not affected by U19 coaches. It's the HoYD, youth recruitment network, scouting knowledge, club reputation, youth setup category and facilities. The HoYD and the youth recruitment network are the most important factors.

For a top club you'll want:
9 first team coaches (2gk, 2fitness 5 outfield).
3-4 physios, one head, one for youth and then one or two further for first team depending on squad size.
One scout with high ability scouting and tactical knowledge for scouting next opponent
As many roaming scouts as you can afford (high scouting CA/PA, Adap, Det, Mot)
Great head of youth development and ***.Man.
5 youth team coaches, one for each category, GK and fitness are taken from first team.

DoF is highly dependent on if you want one or not, can be helpful in getting rid of players but usually not needed.

For smaller clubs, you'll only want one-two scouts along with two physios and one coach to cover two training areas.

I find that...

It's best to have two coaches for at least for each coaching category when you are entrusted with such a backroom staff. This is mostly a good idea if you can get ones who are all 4.5 stars at least if you are a top team but differ on their approach to football either a lot or a little. One who is suited to how your teams plays and another who thinks differently. Make heavy use of the FM coach calculator site, it's essential for when you're signing coaches. I don't sign one without running him through it first, you'll be surprised at some of the results some combined stats get. Furthermore the site although oldish now (2yrs) is still fully correct each time.
As you generally have to prove your metal a fair bit until you are trusted with such a squad, and also simply be able to attract the right ones this can take differing times. However once you have it in place you immediately see the increase in the way you dominate teams and how much more competent your players are. Also how much better developed they are in general.
Anymore than two for each would be two much. Almost all the time for fitness and for keepers i just have one for each. Often look to promote from within. It has the obvious advantages i don't need to state and you can also go over you limit (if you feel it is too small) by signing up to your limit then promoting people from U21/U18 positions to others. There was one small club i was running in FM14 and i could only have 3 coaches, by promoting from within, then refilling these lower spots and repeating, i was able to get it up to 10.

I don't know anything about training or anything like that, so I just assign my assistant manager to do all training for senior squad. And have the Head of Youth Development do the Youth squad's training. I let my DoF hire all other staff.

Not bad. I would say that u need as many physios as u can as they mean quicker injury recovery. I would also if possible get three coaches wth very high motivation and have one training both fitness categories one training both gk categories and one training all other categories.

Look at this screenshot showing the training responsibilities of each of my backroom staff:

Your aim is to get the highest quality, specialised training for each of the categorised disciplines - as identified on the bottom line. Having a single coach split his time between two disciplines will weaken his degree of specialisation, but that is unavoidable at small clubs or those with restricted budgets. The better and more successful you get in the game, the more staff your Board of Directors will allow you to employ.

I use a smartphone app called FMCoachCalculator to evaluate potential staff signings, to check whether they represent an improvement on what I already have. Now that I have every area of training being taught to a very high level (at U21 and U18 level, too), I only recruit through natural wastage - for example, replacing coaches at the end of their contract or when they retire. I stopped sacking people when I got all areas up to 4 stars.
