Hi, I thought i would do a thread on how to build a club from the lower leagues. Its easy to build a team but if you go up too quickly you will most likely fail in the end. I have been doing some research on how to do this and have put this together. (ITS A READ!)

First of all you need support. A good selection of backroom staff really benefit you through-out the game. Id reccommend getting your staff before you get in any players. This might seem odd but building a team takes time so there is no rush to achieve straight the way. So for staff you need a right-hand man, an assistant manager. In the lower leagues you rarely have a good assistant manager when you start your game. Usually lower league assistants ive found dont give you accurate opposition instructions going into your games. In some cases they dont give any instructions at all. Along with that there is their choice of reccomendations for players. If you send your assistant to a press conference if their not very good they could say something that piles pressure on you and your team which often results in them playing badly because of it all. To find a good assistant go to the staff search screen, hit filter and put in there Staff-Role=Assistant Managers also ask your current assistant to filter out the unrealistic targets because after all, The rubbish assistant does know who is better than him!
Once you have got your new right-hand man i would reccommend a Fitness coach, Having a fit and healthy team is really imporant. Good ones can give your team a vital edge in a cagey game that results in you winning 1-0 late on? on the other hand bad ones means your team will lack stamina and will get injured more often. To find a good one do the same thing as you did to get your assistant manager. Having a better assistant now will get you better coaches scouts and physio's too.
Now you have an Assistant Manager and a Fitness coach, bring in a decent Physio. A combination of a good Fitness coach and Physio is really beneficial getting more out the players and preventing injuries by being fit and healthy. AC Milan have proved this with the aid of Milan Lab (Big medical center basically) and probably thats why Maldini played till he was 41! Chelsea are now looking to do the same by building a base in Surrey.
Now get in a GK Coach, 2 or 3 Coaches the same way as youve got your other staff and you have a good backroom team. Actually you dont! You need a Scout, Id reccommend at least 3.
1 allround good ability scout - scouting next opponent

1 good at judging current ability - scouting the league your playing in
1 good at judging potential - scouting U18 leagues

You can also add to your scout team with the same idea scouting different nations and leagues so should you wish.
Example (1 Judging ability scout - Scouting in France)
Example (1 Judging potential scout - Roaming in Eastern Europe)

BACKROOM TEAM - DONE

Now you need to bring in players. Its really easy to buy loads of frees and loan signings but this isnt quality, its quantity. Doing this can result in unsettling the current players so you wont get the best from them. Use your scouts to give you advice. If theyre reccommendation is less than 3 and a half star rating i would steer away from them. When buying players make sure you buy for the future as well as for now, That way they grow with the club and you wont be throwing them in at the deep end when you blood them in the team. Its really important to listen to your scout. To add to your future stars also give the current youngsters a chance. Clubs all over the world do this (PSV a good example). They call it GROW YOUR OWN read the reports you get on the players from the coaches. If they say they dont have a future then try and sell them or just let there contracts run out so you dont waste money on compensation. If they do have a future then give them some matches and give them a chance or a good way is to send them out on loan. Buying the players for the first team make sure you keep wages down because eventually your transfer budgets in later years will go down and down. Make sure you have abit of a gap in the wage budget, dont go right up to it because the january windows. January is vital, it can sling you the league buying the right players and throw you in the basement if you get the wrong players.

PLAYERS - DONE

The base for a team is key. Build from the back. You need a good goalkeeper that will keep the goals out. A good keeper could make a crucial save and spark a turn around for your side.
A back four is a must. DR DC DC DL. I wouldnt chop and change these players too often, Get a back four that will help your keeper get clean sheets and stick to it.
In midfield try and get a DM, A player who can break up attacks before your back 4 is exposed is a really useful tool to have.
Wingers who can drive foward and not just put crosses in is really good type of winger to have. You can also use them to time waste and give your defensive part of your team some well needed rest bite. Have a selection to choose from though attacking right left and center players are not always nessisary (cant spell). Try and get a couple of hard-workers. Box-to-Box midfielders and ball winners.
Attacking is important though. If you dont attack, you dont score, if you dont score, you dont win, if you dont win, you get sacked! When your buying strikers get a goalscorer. Make sure you have a selection like in the midfield, Poachers are really good to nick a goal at any time. Deep lying fowards are good as target men to bring other players into the game. They may not get as many goals but if they help assist its good for the team.

WHAT TO BUY - DONE

Tactics are important, Use your scouts again. Read their reports on the opposition. The Backroom Advice screen gives you some good tips. Some teams dont play well against a certain formation and others you might have a height advantage over so playing a long ball game will help you. Play to your strengths though, Have a regular 11 in mind which plays well together and help each other. If you hit form then teams will play to defend against you. In these cases where they turn up with a defensive 4-1-4-1 then play your strongest team. Sometimes people just rotate and end up having to go all out attack late on and get caught on the break. Have good set piece takers. A player with the ability to launch in a long throw is useful in lower leagues. Along with that have a good free-kick taker. In many games 1 goal will be enough and a goal from a free-kick might just be what you need. As well as free-kicks goals, you can achieve the same from corners but not as directly.

TACTICS - DONE

Now you have most things in place to have a really successful spell in charge in the lower leagues. And in fact in any top league too. Just a few more tips, In pre-season its important to play some big teams at home to generate some money. Youve got to aim to raise as much money as you can apart from obviously selling players. Another tip is too buy cheap but unique quality players. That way if/when you sell them you are going to make a profit. When youve establised yourself then still keep the same principles. Dont blow £20m on a player when you can get a different player for £5m who does just as good or better than the expensive player.

Building a club is more or less complete when your ticking over a profit every month. It takes time but its by no means impossible.

For player help and tactic help then browse the forums on here for ideas.
Any additional information you think helps build a club and not just a team then just drop it in the comments.

Hope this helps fellow managers! :D

Good guide, will certainly help some people on here.

Thanks.

No i'd leave it as it is :) people will read even if it is long :)

I am managing Bradford. The lowest I have ever managed is Leeds. I have no experience in League Two. Then I saw this guide. The most helpful thing I have ever read! Second on GD in L2 with 6 wins 4 draws and 0 losses. Thanks a bunch mate! :D

Ahh thanks mate good stuff. Keep going your doing brilliantly.

Im glad this thread is gettin such a good responce

It is going to take me a long time to build up the club. Lots of 3 month loans are the only thing keeping me in the promotion race. Bradford do have a decent amount of money though which will help me through.

Yeah, you got to be careful though cause when the loans moves youve got to buy twice as much for the League 1 season which would be very difficult. If you get promoted that is lol.
Player to buy - Pablo Mills from Rotherham, He can play DM or MC very well. He scores loads of goals when i had him at Rotherham. Long range shooting is 1st class.

Good read and some interesting points.
I fall into the category of FM Player who very quickly can build a new squad first season and do well then second season try to make an overly big step up in quality and thus end up with a too small squad and then have a very mediocre season then in the 3rd season have a good one. This is been the case very FM game for the last few years.
On the point of sorting out staff first – tbh I am very poor. Never bother until I am myself settled into the club. 2/3 seasons.

Yeah i am kind of like that too to be honest, but logically thinking if you just build in the first season and getting a steady flow of results then this way will work. 2nd season will be an improvement and then look to take steps foward each season rather than good season average season good season etc etc.
Going from strength to strength can only be a plus.
