How to Change Background filter/opacity

Hey all, I've got some great backgrounds and skins, but I can't read most of the text because the backgrounds are too bright.

I'm looking in the xml of two skins I downloaded Neue2 (which has the filter) and NN (which apparently doesn't). When I go to the string "background opacity" both have been set to 1.0. Yet one skin has it and the other doesn't.

Any tips or help is much appreciated!
 
Open up global_panels.xml and look for the following line:

<!-- rest of the panels -->

Directly below that line you should see this line:

<container class="plain_box" >

Edit that line so it looks like this:

<container class="plain_box" appearance="boxes/main/paper">
Save the file.

The next thing you need to do is edit the graphics files located in [SKIN NAME]/graphics/boxes/main. You can use any graphics app which supports transparent png such as Gimp or Photoshop.
