Hi there, making my first thread here. Sorry for my english, i'm portuguese so it isn't the best. Anyway, I'd like to know if any of you have sucessfully managed to have a great defense (and by this I don't mean the players, you'll catch what i'm saying, and if so, what instructions did you give them, and what do you recommend to defend properly in the back thus conceding few goals per season. More than that, this can also be used to be a discussion thread for how to defend properly and stuff like that. Thanks for reading.

I personally always carry one moderately or very pacey Centre back and set him to cover and use him to stay back for corners so he can chase down a counter attack or what not. I use one bulky as **** defender if i can and keep him as limited defender or ball playing defender with going up on corners to utilise his heading and jumping. Also, I keep the defensive approach bar on advanced tactics VERY low on the limited defender, and slightly higher on the pacey defender.

For full backs I haven't had stellar success - I usually rely on great CBs to make up for full backs as I can never find any full backs that can attack yet be back to defend when really necessary on any duty unless im a big club and can sign the greatest full backs around. Due to this, I have them bombing forward as the best form of defense is attack and it's nice on the eyes.

The only wide play I use is two fullbacks which leaves me very exposed on the flanks and I was conceding a lot of goals from crosses and passes from AMR/L cutting inside.

So what I've done is to drastically reduce both fullbacks closing down slider. Instead of closing down whole field or own half, I have it set to own area.

This ensures that my fullbacks do not get beaten down the flanks, and it contains the wingers on the byline. This A. Prevents the wingers from cutting inside unmarked B. Creates less room for a winger to cross (my fullbacks usually block the cross)

This has drastically improved my defense on the flanks

Something else that might help is playing an anchor man in front of your CBs. I had a wingerless formation as Porto and used a DM with 0 mentality and creative freedom, and he stayed back at all times forming a back three that could beat most counterattacks and had a spare man in case a winger cut inside.

@montaro i used to use your idea about full back closing only his own area, but i think its not very effective tough. i started concede many goals from crosses, because the winger was pretty **** fast and have a great agility. when the winger is like cristiano ronaldo or messi you cant do nothing about it. and p.s even my full back asou ekoto beated by lee chung yong (well i win 4-3 after lead 4-1, but that is not cool)
