I'm trying to do it since I remember, but for me it's impossible. Players, even if they HAVE TO play short, they use long balls, cause the others are standing, there is no moving, etc etc. I hate comparisons to Barcelona, but they are very often playing, let's say: unpromising, first touch balls (or something like that, I'm not really sure the english name of it), and they are waiting, passing between defenders, mids, et cetera. How to do it in FM? Oh, and I don't need advices like slow tempo and short passes, cuz it DOES NOT work.

Thanks a lot and hope, that you can understand everything.

Try and use Nigel Hough's complete dominance tactic.

Maybe if you play a fluid philosiphy, and pass to feet, then players will come closer to support the one with the ball so they can pass it straight to them.

Or do you classify that as "I don't need advices like slow tempo and short passes"

Control, refrain from rigid positioning, play some variation on 4-5-1, possibly making them focus play through the middle (on the main tactics screen, not as a touchline shout).

Yeah, but it's for FM 10. But on the other side it's quite interesting (and even not logical), cause there a lot of players have rather direct pass and they're still playing slow and have a high possession.

It should still work. Most things for FM 10 like graphics and tactics still work on FM 11.

I 've been trying the same thing eit from fm 10 till now. I've found out that besides the slow tempo and width another important thing is keeping the lines close together. That can only happen with a very fluid philosophy, or by individually setting all your players' mentality at the same level, which means allmost all players will have the same mentality (if you're playing very fluid attacking even your defender will have tha same mentality as your attacker). This way your attackers will be close enough to your midfielders in order to get the short pass. Another thing that helps is cutting off your players' long shots, crossing, run with ball even through balls. This way they are always looking to pass to feet. Now the bad news: Eventually with some good passing players (like barca's for example) you'll enjoy much of the possession but you'll hardly have any success.Every time i apply such a low tempo I'm struggling to create chances. However, if i use a quicker tempo it gets much easier and my team gets much better results (even if i lose the possession in many matches i'm able to win with 3 or 4 goals sometimes). I don't think it's possible with the current match engine to enjoy total domination and create the way barca creates in front of goal. If anyone has a different opinion please post it

Dave hough you tool, Anyway try using a slow tempo, and the 4-2-3-1 seems the best for possession from my experience, using a high defensive line and lots of cm's and am's seems to pin the opposition in their own half

I already have written on your topic.
If you could upload it somewhere else?

The key behind having a high possession percentage is down to 3 things

- Get the ball back quickly
- Retain the ball rather than making lots of t-balls
- Play more cautious

If i was to setup a tactic with the only aim to have lots of possession, I would probably use a formation with 3 central midfielders and using the more defensive one as a playmaker, a really defensive playmaker. I would use a more cautious approach and use the shouts retaining possession and keep fwruns and t-balls to a minimum. At the same time, I would close down very high up in the pitch.

For this to work, the players would also have to follow the strategy so players with a high morale, high work rate and high stats in decision and passing would be needed.

If wanting to play around with the Wizard and tweaking some settings, then I would do the following.

Use Fluid - Control
Tweak the mentality of all the players so that they are fixed, i.e, not being effected by us switching strategy
Tweak the tempo and width so that these are fixed ( as above)

Now the mentality, width and tempo would be as the control strategy..

- Set the strategy to Defensive

After this, I would play around with the closing down so that it fits your team

OK BetterHalf just some questions i want help with
1) so Instead of using shouts can you implement them on your pre-match tactic (for example, you could cut off your through balls which is the pass to feet shout), in order to have possession?
2) If you're managing barca , or arsenal with top players should you still set your mentality to defensive or even control? Doesn't the attacking philosophy also get the same results of possession?
3) And finally, does lowering the creative freedom,or through balls of your players help your possession? and if it does can you really cut off Xavi's, Iniesta's, Fabregas' etc through balls and creative freedom and expect them to perform??

1.) See next answer

2.) The mentality should probably be somewhere between Control and Attack. Use Attack or Control and the Strategy and then tweak the players mentality so that its exactly the same but now "fixed". Then switch the Strategy to Defensive. This way, you wont sit deep but play higher up in the pitch with attacking minded players yet restricting their attacking directives

You could now use even more cautious shouts ingame and probably get even more possession. This time, I cant see that this will help you win the game though

3.)Even with a low creative freedom settings, you can still get a creative playmaker to be creative. Just remember that if restricting their t-balls to none, he will play too safe ( getting too much possession since you never actually try to score)
