Hi, I've recently started a game with San Marino, and my aim is to get them as far up the world ranking as possible. Now, this is obviously very tough, but i've devised a few cunning tricks to help. First of all I signed as the manager for relatively bad team (Drogheda United) and signed as many of my San Marinese players as possible on proffessional contracts. I play them every match, so this means they are getting good matchday experience aswell as proper training.

Now, my question is are there any other ways to have an impact upon my nation besides formation and the regular stuff. I'm finding it really interesting, but not being able to simply sign players makes it much harder.

And to tell you my results so far, I beat the Cook Island 2-0 in a friendly, lost 2-0 to Poland, 2-0 to Slovakia and 4-2 to Northern Ireland in World Cup Qualifiers, which are actually pretty decent results to say I was expected to be crushed in each match. Also my star player was out injured, and my whole formation was based around him, so I had to do some serious rethinking.

Thanks :)

yeah keep this updated sounds really interesting

San Marino is gonna be a real toughy!

Just played the Czech Republic, ranked 5th in the world and came away with a 2-1 loss, which my captain and now fully fit star striker, Andy Selva, named the best result in the nation's history :) I went up 1-0 and then they replied in extra time of the first half, and then crushingly they scored in the 90+3 minute. VERY heartening though as I had 52% possession and 11 shots to their 9. I pretty much dominated the first 30-35 minutes and created chance after chance. I feel with a bit more of a clinical edge from my wingers I could have clinched it.

Does anyone have any ideas on other ways to improve the team?

u maybe shud have employed the time wasting tactics in the last 10-15 mins to hold onto the point

I did, changed to my most defensive formation and time wasted like ****. =/ Can't blame the lads though, they're performing exceptionally well, and after each match Selva is saying how morale is high and how proud they are to put on the shirt :)

man thats inspiring that selva is coming out publicly and saying that hes proud to wear the shirt, keep it up thats pretty cool i like when players have the passion to want to play for the team

Yep, it definately bodes well. If we can put these sort of performances in against teams a nearer our own rank, we will certainly begin flying up the world ratings.

The only thing that concerns me is that being in Europe, the standard of competition is generally going to be a lot higher than if I were say in Asia or Oceana, so i'm not sure how many teams I will be facing around my standard in competetive matches.

Amazing result! 1-0 win against Northern Ireland! Got an early goal from a corner in about the 15th minute, was an even game until about 70 minutes when they piled on the pressure. Switched formation to a 5-4-1 and delayed like **** and withstood the 20 minutes of pressure somehow. Probably my greatest result in football manager 09 to date :D Just want to see where that puts us in the world rankings now.

Also faced some adversity because I was holidaying through Drogheda's pre season and my assistant manager made some changes to the squad, so I didn't have my first choice goalie or first choice centre mid =/

good result mate!!
I just lost against Wales with 5-3 (playing Myanmar)

Scoring 3 goals is an achievement in itself with teams of this quality!

Played another match, away to Poland. Lost 3-1 and showed why I am so low down in the world rankings, was completely dominated for the first 70 minutes. Although in the last 20 minutes I was dominating play, which is a good sign as normally I start good and fade away, this shows the team can play well at all periods of the game.

Currently 5th in my group, 6 games played, 5 losses and 1 win, scored 5 conceded 13

First of all, how do you get jobs like San Marino and Myanmar? Also, a good tip for San Marino is to try and take charge at San Marino Calcio (Club side playing in the italian league) and sign some decent players and wait until they gain Sammarinese nationality (5 years)

what is your world ranking now? I remember a chart in which you dropped a good bit. You are just going to have to wait out a few more years until your San Marino club gets more money and better youth players. Are you in Serie A or B I can't remember.
