How to make FM2009 work on a Mini-Laptop

This is a guide for making FM09 work on mini-laptops, such as HP mini 1000-series or Compaq 700. Personally I have a Compaq mini 730EO and the game is working like a charm. It actually works smoother and faster on my mini than on my desktop!!!<?xml:namespace prefix = o /><o:p></o:p>

Step 1 – No CD/DVD<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Since mini-laptops don’t come with a CD/DVD-drive, this is the first obstacle to surpass. I did it in the following way:<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
First, make sure you have a program capable of making iso-images (and the like). I recommend ImgBurn. (google it, it’s shareware).<o:p></o:p>
Put your original FM09 DVD in the drive of your ‘regular’ computer and start imgburn. Choose the option “make image from disc”<o:p></o:p>
Start the process and save the image on your desktop, call it “FM2009.iso”<o:p></o:p>

Now, lets transfer the image file to the Mini-laptop. I used a normal USB-stick to do this. In case you don’t have enough space on your personal USB-stick (I only had a 2gb to do it), you can use winrar to divide the iso into several pieces of desired size. In this case choose “add file to archive”, choose “fastest” in compression method and enter a figure in split volumes, for instance “1800mb” or “1800m” if you have a 2gb usb-stick.<o:p></o:p>

Make a special catalogue on the mini-laptop to put the iso file in. <o:p></o:p>
For instance C:\FM-ISO\<o:p></o:p>

Copy the iso-image, divided or not, to this folder. If it’s divided you will need to install winrar to unpack it (to ‘glue’ together the parts again). <o:p></o:p>

Download a virtual-CD software. There are thousands of them, you can google “virtual CD” to find one. Start up the software and choose to “mount” a new drive, for instance “Z:”. Select the fm2009.iso-file as the source for the mount. Select to keep the drive forever – in my software this is called a “persistent mount”.<o:p></o:p>

That’s it – now you have the FM2009 DVD present in your mini-laptop.<o:p></o:p>

Step 2 – Install the game!<o:p></o:p>
Nothing particular here. Double-click the drive letter you just mounted (Z: maybe), and the installations starts as normal.<o:p></o:p>

Step 3 – Edit the shortcut<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
In order to make FM09 work properly on the small screen you need to edit the desktop shortcut. Right-click it and press ‘preferences’. In the target field add the following in the end --windowed --small_screen.<o:p></o:p>

The new target should like something like this:<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
"C:\Program Files\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009\fm.exe" --windowed -<WBR>-small_screen<o:p></o:p>

Step 4 (optional) – Get the netbook09 skin<o:p></o:p>
Since the screen is so small, sometimes text ‘disappears’ during the game. This can be solved by changing the skin to one designed for small screen laptops.<o:p></o:p>

Unrar the downloaded file and put all the contents in the FM skin folder, usually:<o:p></o:p>
My documents\Sports interactive\football manager 2009\skins\<o:p></o:p>

Edit the shortcut target again, adding “--skin=netbook09” to the end.<o:p></o:p>

The full final target line should look like this:<o:p></o:p>
"C:\Program Files\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009\fm.exe" --windowed -<WBR>-small_screen --skin=netbook09<o:p></o:p>

Step 5 – Update!<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Download the 9.3.0 patch and install.<o:p></o:p>
NOW PLAY THE GAME & ENJOY!!!<o:p></o:p>

OTHER ISSUES<o:p></o:p>
To copy your old saved game to the mini, go to “My documents\Sports interactive\football manager 2009\games\” on the ‘regular’ computer and copy the contents to the same folder on the mini, using a usb-stick. (You can do the same for graphics…)<o:p></o:p>

There is a pretty annoying error. For some @$£€ reason, everything works, except entering the preferences. Then the game crashes! Do not be alarmed though, there is a workaround: download “astray” (google it!). Start it up before you start the game, and now suddenly you can work in preferences. Wiiiieeeerd, but it works. Don’t play the game with astray running, though. It’s muuuuch slower. Once you’ve edited the preferences, turn off the game, turn off astray & start the game again.<o:p></o:p>
