Hey fellas,

Just started a new save as Newcastle, and would like to know how I can play a good counter attacking formation. Its not something I've ever tried as in my other Southampton save I always attacked, no matter what the situation - a bit like Blackpool in real life. So in this new save, I want to try something different, but I'm not really sure how to set up a good counter attacking formation.

So could anybody help me out?

Thanks.

A quick roundup of the basics of modern counter-attacking football:

- A 4-3-3 or a 4-5-1 formation
- Full-backs defending; marking tightly might be useful
- Short passing for most players; higher creative freedom or longer passing freedom for one or two players
- Quick wingers with good dribbling and decisions
- A striker with a good first touch, pace and off-the-ball movement
- Rigidity of play; a quick tempo; a little bit of width

Good luck!

I play a 4-3-3 narrow to congest the midfield, defensive midfielder and a midfield defend and advanced playmaker. I then untick the playmaker options to none as I don't want to play through the middle. Leave the passing to default so I get mixed play short and long great for counters, focus the passing down the flanks as I packed the centre of the pitch. Then set up a deep back line with 2 clicks above slow again to try and frustrate them. I set up fluid and control, depends on your players tho. With the advanced playmaker I tick roam from position and move into channels attacking. So now I will have four attacking players in the 2 wingers one striker and my attacking midfielder, and 6 defending players. So team instruction stick to position high aggression to win the ball less expressive default pressing and drill crosses. I then then go back and tick roam from position on my winger and give the attacking four creative freedom.
