How to spot youth player potential

Hello.

New to football manager, been a fifa manager player since 06.

Anyway, love the game, but is there a way to tell youth players apart? What id like to be able to tell is their potential, and how likely it is that they could become a star player in the future. If it makes it easier, im talking about youth players from the lower leagues, im currently manager of the mk dons, so unlike a team like chelsea, not all youth players will reach pro standard.

Also, on fifa manager, there was a star system, for example, a player with 5 stars, would have huge potential, and is likely to become an international player in the future. Is there a system like this on FM?

Also, what are the main things i should look out for when signing a player? What are the skills that really count.

If you scout a player your scout will give you a current ability rating out of 5 stars, as well as a potential ability rating.

There is a star system. Get a scout report for the player. There you can get comparisons, strengths, weaknesses and what not.

For a youth signing look out for determination,work rate,technique and decisions, they are the core elements for player development. But in lower leagues utilise your scouts and they will give you a report to say the players potential.

The star rating sgiven are only relevant for your club though, so a 5 star potential player at MK Dons may only be a 3 star rated player at Man Utd.

Also the scout report is only as good as the scout, and most lower league scouts are average.
