In my second season I was able to get a really decent assistant coach who I signed to a 1 year contract.

I decided to constantly start sending him to pre-match / post-match press conferences
because even though I always said good things about my team when I did it myself, players always reacted badly to a recent head coach comment - so I stopped going.

When I tried to resign him - his interest was dubious and he refused to discuss a contract extension with the club. Are they more likely to extend if you handle press conferences yourself and don't put as much work on them?

I doubt it, i never really do press conferences as they are boring and never had an assistant reject a contract extension :s
Did you maybe walk away from a contract offer with him and thats why he's upset

I've never seen it have any effect, and i never attend my conferences. Either you upset him, or he's just done with the club (john mcmahon at liverpool, **** him, making me find another attacking coach!)
