Importance of goals!

I have just finished the first season on my new game and was just having a look at the leagues and cnt believe how close several leagues were. very weird season

Man U winning PL on goal difference (chelsea liverpool n arsenal not in top 4)
wolves pompey and fulham all on 40 points, wolves relegated
Brighton finish second on goal difference in league 1
Shrewsbury win league 2 on goal difference
chester finish 7th even tho have a 25 point deduction 1 point off 6th

has this happened to anyone else! seems like i was in the boring league this season the championship

Well obv I no that goals are important but just the number of place that were decided on goal difference
 
Yet Arsenal are hailed for their goalscoring ability yet win nothing. (H)
 
as i said b4 obv i no u need to score goals to win but was just shocked at how many positions were decided on Goal Difference.

every other season i play there always seems to be a clear cut winner.
plus tyhe fact that 3 of the BIG four didnt qualify for champions league
 
The relegation battles in my games for as long as iv been playing football manager have never gone to 40 points
