Inconsistent results help needed

So I'm playing as Hull and after keeping them up and getting consecutive 5th place finishes in the league my team has started to perform very inconsistently. I have some very good regens but my team has some very unconvincing wins and pathetic losses to teams that we should beat easily.

This is the tactic I am currently using. I've been trying out alot of other tactics to try and get some results so that's why it isn't fluid. The team instruction you cant see is Pass Into Space. The player instructions are as follows;

GK: Distribute to defenders, Pass it shorter
DR/DL: Mark Tighter, Stay Wider, Run with ball wide
DCs: Pass It Shorter, Mark Tighter
M(CR): Pass It Shorter
M(CL): Pass it Shorter, Shoot Less Often, Mark Tighter
AMR: Pass it Shorter, Get Further Forward, Roam From Position
AMC: Pass it Shorter
AML: Pass it Shorter, Hold Up Ball
ST: Pass it Shorter, Close Down Less

Paulino has the potential to score 40 goals a season in my opinion.
He does score alot but not enough for how many chances we create.

Esparza is solid but tends to go missing in games.
His average rating is way below what it should be.

Portela is pretty solid but I think he should be taking over games against weaker teams.​

So yeah that's about it. Any help would be much appreciated as I am losing patience with FM 14.

Are your players inconsistent?
A BWM is sort of bad protecting your back line alone, and u have him pared up with a CMA , also change one winger and one FB to attack role so you have better penetration down the flank.
And your team is probably better and team play you differently now than they did a season or 2 ago.
